18th interment was in greenwood cemetery jeorgetown appropriate ceremonies last week marked the 25th anniversary of the formation of georgetown lions club it is a time for citizens in general to congratulate club members past present and future for they have given the town and district much to be thankful for such things as the downtown drinking fountain bic ycle racks and the bandstand in the park were lion projects and of course the greatest public service of fered by the club has been promotion of the commun ity swimming pool while not in itself a club endea vor it is sure that it never would have came into being without the original large cash donation and the ef forts of club members in sparking the organization but it is for the smaller behind the scenes activi ties that the lions are owed a greater debt of gratitude an example to follow rarely is it that one can speak of a man as being a true follower of his faith and when such a man lives in a community there can be no record of the good he has accomplished by his presence as truly as an earthly being can judge j d god frey was such a man it was the editors personal opinion formed as a neighbour and during several years casual association tn business dealings with the united church and the bible society but we would hesitate to editorialize on our own had not so many people spoken in similar vein when they heard the news of his sudden death mr godfrey lived by his religion and it showed school well named decision of the school board to name george town s third public school harrison will meet with wide approval tn town for the harrisons are a family whose contribution to education has been considerable the late robert harrison served for several years as principal of what was then georgetowns only pub lic school now chapel street his daughter haze re- children have been aided with operations eye glasses tonsilectomies in numerous cases where their parents could not afford such necessities they are done quietly without publicity for this is the nature of service club work and the lions reward is in know ing that they have provided a brighter future for a young person who might otherwise have been handi capped as citizens the only way we can repay the lions club for their good work is by generous patronage of their public fund raising events and by enhancing their reputation by always speaking favourably about any lions project a service club of this sort is a dec ided asset to a community and deserves every recog in his face and m his beating he did not walk around with a bible in his hand nor spout pious platitudes his religion was more a matter of every day living and he was the type of man who could cheer you up by ust looking at him for he radiated an inner calm and fortitude attained by only a fortunate few the world was better off and georgetown more specifically by the years he spent on earth and it will be a better world in future because of him for who can assess the far reaching effects of kind deeds which pass from one person to another in everincreas ing circles tired a few years ago after valuable service as a mem ber of the teaching staff for over forty ears and his son percy still continues his interest m education in the position of treasurer of the school board there is then a triple reason for the school nam ing and it is nice to know that the harrison name will be perpetuated in one of the towns public buildings pot pourri a regrettable error in a new item last week om itted the name of the bridesmaid from a wedding it was one of those times when the editor skipped a couple of lines while typing his copy we apologize to msr william aacmurdo who was mary mcdonald and to her bridesmaid anne chalker anne by the way wore blue tufted net over satin with matching lace jacket blue headdress and mittens and carried yellow glads and blue hyacinths while working at cedar- vale school contractor norton nelson and bob keeler were surprised to see a fat dew worm wriggling on the ground he had apparently emerged from the fro zen depths much in advance of spring weve been taking a daily constitutional lately walking to work and are much more conscious of the courtesy which motorists should extend to pedestrians along the spla shy highway and john street approaches to downtown add 236 new phones in town last year with more telephones added more money spent on new construction more employees more shareholders and more calls handled than ever be fore the bell telephone company of canada experienced a record year in almost every way during 1955 according to the companys 76th annual report telephones in the bells ontarioquebec territory increased last year by 228287 bringing the total in service at the end of 1955 to 2522745 the overall increase incu ded more than 135000 new residence telephones over 50000 new telepho nes for business purposes and the addition of more than 40000 tele phones through the transfer of the facilities of three former subsidiay companies into the companys system locally growth in telephone serv ice paralleled this overall expansion commenting on the report l g den- by bell manager for this region said that 239 telephones were added in georgetown during 1955 the total at the end of the year wu 2254 throughout ontario and quebec ex penditures for new construction were 128400000 this wu 23100000 more than in 1994 itself the previous record year yet due to the strong and sustained demand there wire 47000 orders for lerrice not filled at the end of the rear a still larger cobjtroctioo activity is planned for 1906 by far the larger part of which win be devoted to equipment for local as spring approaches drivers should remember those on foot four deaths within a week have cast their shadow particularly on st johns united church where all four persons were members a good project for ratepayers organizations in the new subdivisions would be organized tree planting along the town boulevards nothing beautifies a residential district more than trees and it is a matter which could well be sparked by resi dents who will benefit in future years by their beauty and now that the town is larger mightnt there be enough interested people to form a drama association there have been such things in the past and there must be talent among some of the newer residents elora only a village supports an active drama group which presents some worthwhile plays georgetown could have the same if enough people were interested honour harrison name in new public school
