the georgetown herald georgetown ontor o wednesday march 14th 1956 second section chatting business ladies at their charter night f since i mentioned the ev ening grosbeaks which are brl ghtenlng the winter scenes ar ound this district several people hove told of seeing them around town in eluding our neighbour mrs burton macdonald a week ago sunday mrs james richardson edith strtet who makes a little hobby of bird watching was thrilled when a really large flock of grosbeaks about a hundred or more stopped in their flight to pay them a visit she sent me a little note telling about it which went on to say perhaps they just stopped long en ough for sabbath morning worship and song with the tall trees around supplying the choir loft for their mel odious voices after morning worship they lun vhed on patches of bare ground here and there and i think our flowering crab tree supplied the dessert 1 wat ched them digging the seeds from the frozen crabs with their yellow bills the grosbeaks are about the size of our robin and in colour they resemble the oriole these beautiful birds res ted and sunned themselves for about fifteen minutes before continuing their flight to their summer home wherever that may be my use of quotation marks reminds me that i must be very careful about using quotes in my last column t was quot ing from the halton atlas and men tioned a mr james young who was one of the first georgetown merch ants according to the item he star ted his store here in 1842 and is now manager of the bank of commerce at belleville so i agree that he certain ly would be rather elderly well over a hundred in fact except that i was quoting direct from the atlas the item caused many a chuckle and i must admit that u was a bit mislead ing because the quotation marks d d not appear at the first of tht para graph but just at the close and as i said i must be more cartful of my quotation marks it can be confus ing but 1 m go in on with the quotes from the atlas neertheloss just to keep a little spark of continuity in giving vou b ts of the historical back ground of our town according to the atlas the village gcoretownl during the building of the grand trunk railway grew rapidly up to that time it was a pirt of the to vn ship of esquesing but the inhabitants thinking that from the growing mpor tance of the place it would be more conducive to their general prosperity to have the management of th ir o vn local affairs in the hands of men of their own choice applied to the coun ty council for incorporation as a vil lage by by law of that body the de sire of the petitioners was granted and the village as such dates its his tory from the 1 december 1864 on which day the iw was passed coming back to the pros ent day again a week or so ago mrs wilf ford was looking out of the kitchen window of their home just across the road from the golf course as she did the breakfast dish es when she saw a fox at the base of an apple tree in their yard it was in tent on something in the branches and that something proved to be two beautiful big pheasants it made quite a picture which mrs ford did nothing to disturb since she was al one at the time the fox finally tired of wailing for the pheasants to come down and trotted off in the direction of the golf course and i hope he trotted off a goodly distance because the rabies scare haa made ole reddy american days 1 happened to remark that i thought it might be fine sport to ski doun a dollars and sense one of the best ways to encourage good sound sleep is to have a good sound bank balance regular savings can make life a lot pleasanter in a hundred and one other ways you may want the down payment on a home of your own atvsetoracar perhaps the children s education is on your mind or a leisurely retirement someday whatever it is that you want or need you have to learn the secret of putting something by regularly pay by pay you store away the money eicept in emergencies till you reach your savings goal then you start saving for the next one why not open a savings account with a today 0oiatown ranch c j hart manager the cabaduh bank of commerce medium mountainside but herring boning it up the slope was a somewhat discouraging tnought ht explained that many ski resorts hove tows but if you re really serious about sltnnt and intend to go some distance for ward fur pelts are commonly used to fasten to the bottom of the skis fur side out of course to give better trac tion in the snow i don t honestly think these would be necessary out on the golf course where the skiers of town and district have been and still are since this latest snowfall having a wonderful time on the hills cooking school a grand success sponsored by agricultural ladies another successful event was held last
