tooth decay decrease the medical statistics division of the out dept of health has repor ted to health minister phillips that since the introduction of fluorine in to the water system at brantford there has been a significant de crease amounting to 60 per cent in the number of decayed missing and filled teeth suffered by brantford school children the report resulted from a dlvis lonal review of the findings of the brantford experiment at the close of the 10year experimental period in 194555 the purpose of the brantford exper iment was to determine whether the mechanical adjustment of the fluoride content of the municipal water sup ply to 1 2 parts per million fluondat ion would reduce the rate of tooth decay to the lower level found in reg ions where the drmkinf water con tains fluoride naturally commenting on the report dr phillips referred to an earlier re port by a university of toronto com mittee which stated there was merit in the claims made for the fluonda tion of community water supplies an 1 that there was nothing to indicate that this practice was harmful to per sons of any age in the circumstances therefore dr phillips said the introduction of 1 2 parts sodium fluoride to one mil lion parts of water in municipal wat cr supplies would appear to be both harmless and beneficial the maxi mum concentration should never be higher than 1 5 parts of sodium flu onde in one million parts of water in its report summary the divis ion of medical statistics states that practicing physicians and dentists in brantford have attested to the ab sence of any clinically observable ill effects this would appear to be in line with other similar reports the safety of investing water flu ondes at the recommended dosage has been studied and has been attcs ted to by all of the leading agencies and organizations concerned with the health of the public the report sta tes the report notes that during the 10year period since fluoride was ad ded to the brantford water supply the canes attack rates n that city have decreased to become comparable to those in the natural fluor de ree ion of stratford ont i revlously the brantford dental canes rates were as high as in sarma ont where there is no fluoride in the water discussing the cost of water fluor idation in brantford the report states it has ranged between 12 and 17 cents per capita por year us ng the chemi cal sodium fluoride but the use of sodium silicofluoridc in the future is expected to reduce this cost to ab out six cents per capita the small expenditure results in an average reduction in decaed teeth the treatment of which would cost between 10 and 20 times as much the study comments the report states that dr w i hutton medical officer of health for the city of brantford deserves much credit for initiating the practice of water fluoridation in canada and that dr hutton s own words could be used to summarize conclusions of the re port brantford s 10year study of water fluoridation has demonstrated that fluoridation is simple cheap effect lve and completely safe export market may demand luted herds jew judging by the comments which have been dropped at various live stock annual meetings in recent months the day may not be too far removed when only cattle from lis ted herds will be eligible for export to the united states that would likely mean a test and slaughter pro gramme for brucellosis with i ex pect compensation for reactors as in the case of tuberculosis furthermore the consensus of opinion appears to be that no area would be eligible for such a programme until such area has been under a compulsory calfhood vaccination programme for several years as we see the picture hilton cattle owners would be well advised to sec to it that all of their heifer cal ves whether grades or purebreds are vaccinated at the proper afe namely 6 to 8 months inclusive in short in our opinion the question of calfhood vaccination is sufficiently important that the cattle owner should see to it himself that h s heifer calves are vac cinated at the proper age the vcter jnarians and inspectors arc all busy men so don t blame them if your calves are not vaccinated when at the proper age it is your responsi bilit orangemen initiate new lodge member at the regular meeting of royal oak loyal orange lodge 245 the ini uatlon of sam r reid 1 college sf was conducted by the
