herald is printed each wednesday in the office at 22 main st georgetown down but not out renewed interest m the chamber of commerce is indicated after a meeting last week with a larger attendance than discouraged officals had seen for some time those present received some inspiration from bob mundle ontario representative for the chamber of commerce who outlined some of 1he things which groups in other towns had accomplished and indicated ways that the local organization could benefit itself by various types of meetings and activities for the past few months the chamber executive had been so discouraged with lack of interest that ser ious consideration was given to disbanding and wind ing up affairs for the time being for once lack of interest paid off for when meet ings were called to discuss disbanding so few mem bers turned up that as secretary charlie wray would say afterwards we can t even get a quorum to end the chamber a new executive was elected last week and en ough enthusiasm engendered after mr mundle s talk to make them think that it isnt altogether hopeless to education costs a problem mounting costs of education are creating munici pal problems which eventually must be solved by a higher government authority monday georgetown council endorsed a resolu tion received from a northern municipality asking queens park to assume 50 per cent of school costs at that time it was pointed out that a 1955 public school expense of 65 000 has increased to 90 000 in an in itial estimate and is 107000 according to the school boards requisition this is based on foreseeable fac tors which in our town can change by midyear we are in process of building one new public school and a substantial high school addition engag ing additional staff for both public and high schools and paying higher salaries to all teachers the same story is echoed in all growing towns which have one saving feature in that assessment is exped an active chamber of commerce to flourish eventually here it wont be any immediate process of rejuvenation and it will take time georgetown seems to be unique in that everyone is so busy with so many things that it is hard for any one organization to get any measure of suppor at any given time merchants on whom a chamber must count for ma jor support have been singularly apathetic the pa3l few years and these men who most of all can bene fit by progress which a chamber fosters must be drawn into the fold and made to realize that a progres sive town helps them particularly while helping ev eryone else in the community in one way or another we were struck by one thing mr mundle said in his talk young people can say they are too busy to be active in the chamber but they must be for it is their own future which they are creating older peo pie may say they have had their day and will derive no benefit by anything the chamber does but they at least owe a debt to those whose past work ere ated a town where they earned their livelihood and can pay it by working ahead for the next generation mounting also and there are more taxpayers to share the burden dormant municipalities are in an even tougher spot because they must compete with higher salary schedules in such towns the answer may eventually be institution of the school system as a civil service operated from queen s park instead of school boards competing for teach ers and facing maor decisions in new buildings and accommodation they could handle administration while a central authority controlled these larger prob lems it would remove local autonomy to a large ex tent but the time is coming when such a solution seems the only answer to a complex problem of fin ance and management which is getting too big for municipalities to handle by themselves
