really it is heartbreak ing nine out of everj ten homes have been left with a great pile of red claj nothing will grow in this cli unless a great deal of time is spent preparing it for lawns and flower beds the main consideration is the posi twn of jour lawn decide that and then plan suitable flower beds not cuttinj up the lawn too much as it makes extra work when mowing the lawn in most places it is necessary to ij drain pipes under the lawn as drainage is most important these miv load either to a culvert or to a sump a sump being a hole ap- proximatel 4 feet square and 3 feet deep fill this with large stones al most to the top where the pipes will lead into it then fill up the remain ing space with top soil if the ground is level the pipes would be laid about 12 deep and gradually fall at the rate of 1 in 10 feet tow ards the outlet fill all trenches containing drains with ashes or gra vel and put 3 of top soil on the surface now comes the task of levelling the lot if ou do have good top soil it is advisable to remove this until jou have filled the holes with subsoil take plenty of time roll ing and raking as it is really ncces sary to have a flat surface for good results either for lajing turf or sow ing seed turf may be laid any time but is rather costly and generally a sown lawn is more satisfactory i would advise ou to sow at the end of august after sowing the ground should be raked and cross raked to a depth of v to cover the seeds roll with a light roller do not let the ground dry out or you will have bare patches cut the lawn when it has grown to a height of 2 then mow with the blades set high after a couple of weeks you may gic it a good fertilizing which will help to establish the lawn before the hard weather flower beds must always be raised higher thin the lawn level when the land is bad especially wkb clay you can improve it tremendously by lijaak cars i international truck salc9 iirv1cb 24hr towing trr36h res tr 73329 new and used
