the georgejwh herald wednesday evening june 6th 1956 page 2 chatting with m h b 0ever since it was completed a year ago ive been intrigued by the original design of the house on no 7 highway just this side of norval when you drive by and observe the unusual shape of the roof it reminds mt of a butterfly s wings and tht large and plentiful picture windows the whole effect is one of airiness as tho the house were designed to exclude as little as possible of the lovely rolling semciy it commands from its hillside sett ng i must admit too that i had a ways wondered who was bu idm the house fso it was a double pleasure one evening last week to i lce the owner and also see the house when miss gladjs fraser invite i us to dinner at her spot on 7 miss frasers house has combined the din ing facilities of a restaurant with he comfort of home thru tht skill of architect e c s cox of islington as well as serving chicken or steak dinners reservations arc advisable miss fraser also displays and sells her craft work the establishment of her spot on 7 is the culmination of a ion cherished ambition for miss fraser when she taught arts and crafts at the montreal high school miss fra ser spent her vacations at hotels and restaurants where she became much interested in the preparation and scring of food thiu this she formu lated the idea of building a home for herself where she could serve din ners also work at and sell her minx crafts she is adept at leathe cuft metalcraft silk screening ten nit- painting and furniture relini hin and her knowledge and skill alonj these lines has htlptd to mak hit home unique inside as well as out 0 the dining room is tht lar gist r iuiii in the house o r lookinj the xalltj with full length pictun windows on thin sidis tivin tht fullest benefit of the wew the kilthen is lare and isiblt from tht dining room with nl a partial partition separating the two room- a bed sitting room for miss fraser two bathrooms an i entrance fmir complete the flooi plan of the upper part of the house it is a split leil design because of its hillside location and downstairs there is a large room still to be fin ished rasily accessible from botli floors are the patios at the si ie an i back of the house they art most attractive in their curving design miss frasers brother whose homi is in port credit is building the pati as a spare time hobbv incidentally miss fraser chose this part of on tano for her venture in order to tn near her brothers home i had ask cd her out of curiosity because aftir all it is a long way from montreal the house was started almost tw t years ago and miss fraser muvi 1 here last spring f i think you ll be interested in hearing of the unique appoint ments miss fraser has incorp r ated into her home as you enter the dining area the first thing you notice are the attractive drapes at the large expanse of picture window they are made of burlap printed with a silk screened design of the spot on seven and miss frasers initials g f which in her case can also stand for good food miss fras cr made the drapts and silk screened the design the dining room chairs were also another proji ct if miss fraser s it took nearly all winter but she refinishcd and re up holstered them all the material on the chair seats matches the paint us ed on the ceiling incidental thr ceiling is quite lovely with huge solid fir beams supporting the angled roof these have been finished in tht ir na tural colour 0 the big fireplace in tho din ing room holds more thin piss ing interest too when you learn that some 130 tile forming the hearth were made from the clay taken from the foundation excaation miss fra ser had the clay shipped to mm trcal whf n she rolled it with a roll ing pin t f m free form til s she fired i ice in her kiln at th school th n hippt 1 it baek up h n where sb anrl tier nephew laid it to forn th hnrh it made about ho tiles aitho hi aided nothing ti the tin f r mak ni the tile miss fr sir dfubts thit hie clay could be su sf ilh i el in miking poltrrv an original idea too were the d rkmbs nui f ier door thev lo krd 11 first jjance like two sub stanln chunks of w d thais x actly what thf mn but wjih a special silmfiancc fir miss frasi they were hewn from her grat grandfathers loj cabin in chance harbour nova scotia not in a class to match that for antiquity but still it shows what cngenuity can do wilh old things miss fraser has fashioned a table in the entrance hallvv ay of her home from the body part of an old fashion cd treadle sewing machine the wheel of the tame machine made the whirling pedestal of a lazy susan and th drawen from it make an attractive and uieful comer of a headboard unit in her bedroom 0 wl wiri a littli pressed for time tht evening we dined with un
