application the herald is printed each wednesday in the office at 22 main st georgetown a worthy tribute dedication last week of a plaque which will be placed in glen williams public school to honour the memory of john h bingham was a worthy tribute to a man who devoted a great deal of his time and abil ity to education for forty years mr bingham served at- various limes as a glen school trustee a member of georgetown high school board and member of the township area board set up in 1946 to administer affairs of a number of rural schools he was chairman of this board at the time of his death a year ago an executive of alliance paper mills mr bmg ham had business ability and leadership to give to school affairs and the stable financial condition and excellent teaching reputation of esquesmg schools is in no small part due to this leadership trees should be replaced it is good to see the new horticultural society talking of tree planting on a large scale m town par 1 cularly m the newer subd visions trees make a home and no dwelling can be com plete without these beautiful adornments of mture like many other things it is human nature to put th ngs orf and each year a tree is not planted is one ear that it cannot be enjoyed in a neighbourhood a letter m this issue complains of the town s plan to remove five trees from the mam st n district i is a great pity if this has to be done and we hope a a fferent solution can be found for installing nev a simple plaque is fitting to honour his memory for lie was a simple man who never set personal ac claim above the larger aim of a ob well done his work on the school board was done well and quietly and his death left a vacancy in school leadership not easy to fill the plaque states remembering you we will be brave and strong erected by the ratepayers of the school area as a tribute to john h bingham who from 1914 1955 gave devoted leadership to education in the township of esquesmg stewarttown judy walker leader junior wa meet the junior w a meeting was held at mrs bailys home it was judy walkers turn to take the meeting she chose the hymn we plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land and conducted the wor read the minutes of the last meeting a quilt wds lied in the husy period we were pleased to have mrs san- fords sister as a visitor to our meet ing the w a meeting is to be held on wednesday of this week to make way for the ltd and baking sale on rhurs dayt esquesmg w i meeting will be held at mrs r- lawon s home wedncs day of next week june 13th topic agriculture roll call what i like most about this monlh service next sunday will be in charge of mr w h beaumont of the glen mr maxwell will be on holidays for education is mg r sidewalks without cutting down trees wh ch will take years to grow again to their present size but it it must be one thing the town could do would be to replace them immediately wilh ntw growth in a different location we suggest that the town council adopt this pol icy now and make a point of replacing every tree de stroyed in the necessary march of progress of roads sewers and sidewalks with another which in ten or fifteen years will again provide shade and pleasant surroundings georgetown could be known by no finer name than the town of trees it cant open yet they say money isn t everything but it is al most that when ou haven t got enough thats the feeling of the community swimming pool committee who have a fine pool almost completed which must wait until enough generous people con tribute 18000 people are not going to like the fact that the pool cannot be used until the committee sees the end of fin ancial worries but one cannot have what one cannot pay for and the plumbing and electrical connections cannot be made and finishing work done until there is assurance that the 50 000 obect ve can be met pot pourri peaple read the herald carefully sometimes usr week an article told that three ladies would be call ing door to door laking the federal census information two calls came next day from people perturbed be cause a man had visited their homes seeking similar information we hastened to assure them that tt is a coincidence that the local yearly census is also in pro gress and their caller was either commissioner joe gibbons or cliff hibbert of the municipal office staff it is good to know that people do ask some ques- toins because all too frequently we hear of someone usually an elderly widow being hoodwinked by some fast talking character there are endless rackets like the ones who pose as bank inspectors and get a sig nature which they later copy on a cheque others who sell sojne goods and get the person to sign a contract which contains some hidden clauses in the fine print it is always wise as the chamber of commerce keeps warning to ask for a persons credent sign papers or hand over money to strangers of fice managers of two local firms have been off work for some time howard hillock of alliance paper has had a lengthy stay in hospital in toronto and it valley hill ratepayers assoc monthly meeting chapel street school tuesday june 12th 8 pm business discussion on storm sewers and street lighting mr h boyes sales manager unitd suburb gas co will show films and answer questions on the use of natural gas au ratepayers in georgetown are invited there are many who have given generously and done their part there are others whose contribution has been perhaps smaller than they could afford and there are many unfortunately who have not yet seen fit to make even a token contribution to this fin community asset everyone knows best their own category and it would be nice to think that the 18 000 would come from free will offerings in the next two or three weeks optimistic perhaps but possible if we all dig n aiii be a few weeks yet before he is bick on th ob harry adams who holds a similar position at bmilh and stone is at present a patient in hamilton san where reports are that he is making good progress misfortune comes triple sometimes and jack mac oougall son of mr and mrs elwood macdougall tias had more than his share twice a victim of a broken leg jack had recovered sufficiently to begin work at avro recently and was only on the job a short time when he had a fall and broke his leg again tough luck mrs w g o thompson who has been in ottawa with son jack since the archdeacons death has returned to st catharines and is living at 183 king street in that city attending the first meet tng in the new council chamber last week we couldn t help but notice the first obecl that met the eye as one entered the room a large shovel whether it had any significance or not it was missing from the scene at mondays meeting the new room is still incomplete but promises to be a great improvement over the former crowded quarters tile floor is still to be laid and wall panelling done guaranteed investments amount one may invest 100 term s to 10 years legal fob estate and
