it wouldnt it jack fry please note being the luckiest tuss we know around tne branch it s very rare indeed that we see fit or have the opportunity to menlion one of our members for something very outstanding by this we don t imply that thi re are not many worthy of menion for various things hut unless it is a very unusual circumstance no menlion has been made of indivi dual members however it gave us a great deal of pleasure read in the local paper recently of that up and coming service club the rotary choosing alf permit as one of its men of the year to us this award is one that has been overdue for a good many years and not just from the rotary club but from the entire community if ever a man deserved credit for a large contribution to the cultural life of the community its alf as bandmaster he has been with us more years than we care to re member we recall very well over twenty years ago being one of a group of youngsters who formed the first boys band in george town at any rate alf has con tnbutcd to the musical education of at least two generations and in thi line has become nationally known as a top flight bandmaster not only in the field but also in that of always being willing to be present and help at any gathering be it adjudicator at a music festt val or organizer and chief clown in a clown band for the annual christmas tree also always inter ested in his fellow citizens alf has always been willing to help out and during our yean head ing the legion on many occasions be donated to various worthy cu es always with the admonition to us that his donation was to be an onymous particularly to mind we think of the christmas tree which always found alf a big contributor therefore it was with a great deal of sorrow that many of his friends saw the quiet way in which he gave up his leadership of the local lorne scots brass band and his departure from the regiment which he had served so long we know that is the way he would like it but we still think that the or gamzaions including branch 120 to which he contributed so much and indeed the community as a whole should have had some af fair to mark his passing from the local musical scene and indeed its not too late yet incidentally for the very few about the branch who do not know of htm hes is a veteran of both wars and a long time member of the legion he is employed with the local firm of smith and stone interesting to read in the leg lonary of the attitude some bran ches take in discouraging youth from taking an active part in leg ion affairs at a local level glad say such has never been the case in our branch but indeed has been otherwise after all new brooms new ideas and it has al ways been our contention that the blood should be kept fresh in the executive of any branch i offer no sympathy for the particular spc cies of diehard who wishes to cling to power even unto the grave by this we do not mean to infer that you shouliln t be careful in selecting the right tvpe of officer afler all it s essential that certain basic types of personality handle our affairs primarily and most important of course is the ability to handle finances branch 120 is running a major business a busi lss that will iome dav we hel vc take the services of a fiitltime manager therefore quite obvious 1 it would he not only extremely foolish but suicidal for the branch intrust their affairs say to a person unable o handle bis own finances or who was not sufficient interested to spend the time nee ar o handle thi job so far r executive officers hjve com sed a nisonablv well
