have been promising ourselves and our family a holiday a little out of the ordin ary no it wouldnt be out of the ordinary lor some people but then the newspaper business is an ex acting business meeting deadlines keeping a weekly vigil for news of local happenings getting the printed word to the public and leaves little time for extended holidays yes on this particular sunday believe it or not staff we were away on a motor trip by 6 30 a m having dinner in gananoque we then crossed the impressive ivy oakville monumentworks memorials of distinction a laroe variety of dependable granites state did not impress us too much however we hadnt been used to anything too wonderful along nn 7 as we entered the adirondack country the highways were g od and the scenery breathtaking wo made our headquarters the first night at saranac lake and drove over to lake placid to see it lit up at night this is probably he ur gest summer playground for the american wealthy with their lux urious hotels and resorts we wpic in time to see some of the sea flea races on saranac lake enjov the scenery before dusk and found accommodation so enticing it was hard to leave in the morning while the dew was still on the car during the next few days p mo tored through some delightful mountain countr where th tern peratures were perfect tor a sum mcr day and the night air so invig orating we had heard of the beauty of the hills of vermont but one has to see them to really appreciate this grandeur previous to entering on to this beauty we crossed historical lake champlain on the ferry to burlington this fresh water lake lies hetween the adirondacks and vermonts fam ous green mountains if you re member your history this is where the first american naval battle was fought against the britiih in 1770 the city of burlington left the impression of a beautiful city with its quiet way of life its cour teous frundly attitude do you know that in the shopping centre of this big city there are no stop signs no traffic lights and we didn t see a policeman when ped estnans wanted to cross the street all traffic stopped and let them proctld even traffic moved at an easy leisurely pace we hated to leave vermont he cause we thought we had seen the ultimate in scenic beauty however new hampshire opeiud a new sight for the eyes heautiful mountain ranges like the presiden lial range mt washington and whilefjce mountain mt washing ton is the highest east of the mis mssippi jnd if you hdve a mind 1 1 jim can drive to its g288 ft sum mit we were satisfied just to gaze from below the terrain continued to be of a rolling nature as we continued into the state of maine and through the scbago long i akc region which has something to offer everyone lakes mountains glorious seen cry and an invigorating climate our next stop was at portland on the east coast a lovely city with beautiful parks and waterways while boasting a population of 99 000 here too lhiro was no rush of traffic as you might expect in a canadian city we enjoyed everv minute of our slay in this friendlj place we had planned a rather exten sivc program and the mantimes were our next port of call after dealing with a vcr skeptical im migration officer who seemed to doubt our word wc entered new brunswuk at st stipten and pi i corded to st andrews f r wc had often heard of the beautiful hotel ncre with its sand biirhcs if jou go to st andrews bj sure to see the lobster pound factory it is thi v ord s largest an i we iruny pounds of these delicacies nady for r lo he countrys finest eating places we came away from st johns with mixed fcelingb getting into the city at the rush hour we sure lost the respect we hoped to have for canadas oldest seaport ns we went round and round wh ihr traffic on oneway streets with horns honking and brakes screech ing there was certainly a contrast from the american cities we had visited but wc could see tha commerce was more achv on this side of the border we stayed long enough to sec the streets of old frame buildings four and fivo stor eys high and realized thit when we read of the tragic fires in the cast that the chances of escap ing from these buildings is stacked against you unable to get a ferry to nova scotia wc drove down through sus sex and moncton over the nova scotia border and made our head quarters at amherst the nova scotians take a pride in their pro vince as was evidenced by the heautiful entrance to the province a tourist gets a warm welcome as be enters a sea of flower beds welcome signs information bur eau rest rooms and a scottish pi per in full kilts playing on the bagpipes we found the nova scotians very friendly and shared our evening picnic supper with two couples whom we found had km as close to our home town as streetsvtlle we had to get up early next morning to catch the ferry to pnnce edward ulind our trip would not have been complete without visiting the isle and green gables you see wc still remember lucy m montgomery when with her minister husband she lived at norval the famil who had read anne of green ga bles and other kindred books thoroughly enjoyed evfry minute of our stay at green gables leaving green giblet we had a swim in the salt water which we found rather cold or pleasure a visit to the parliament build ings in charlottetown is a must since our first parliament and con federation originated here and a friendly custodian ushered our daughter to the speakers chair and presented her with an authentic picture for the signing of confed cration columns could be written on what we saw but we must be brief and suffice it to say that new brunswick has many beautiful spots like the fundy national park the drive to frcdencton and north to quebec the drjve through the eastern quebec provinces was quite a contrast to the ontario scene but the city of quebec itself had many attractions for the visi tor we hired a guide to take us on a tour of the city and he did a wonderful job of explaining the history of quebec the battle of the plains of abraham the old fort the first churches montcalms home the narrow streets etc if you go to quebec city this is the only way to see and know it we didnt spend much time in montreal it is a busy place like toronto and we didnt want to spoil our memories of the green mountains and the eastern provin after visiting with friends in port hope and oshawa we arrived home happy to have seen a small part of the world outside but proud to come back to the good id town of georgetown and onta no itself social and personal mr
