in di generous gesture action of dominion seed house m making serera hundred shrubs available for planting in public locations in town should be appreciated by everyone in years to come it will be a contributor it can make to a comn ui ty tr t are always people ready to help beautify hit la idscape but until they form into a specih christmas decorating chances of any comb ned effort of dow i town merchants on a christmas decorating pro iect seem slm at the moment at a rece i ci amber of con met let j it was reported that last year when a special meeting of merchants was called to discuss chr si mas decorating only a handful turned up ti t only thing possible was to purchase a few small trees wh ch with light strings supplied by the hydro added a small seasonal touch to the mi n street landscape but which fell far short of what could be done with a united effort perhaps this year will be the une and en ough merchants w ii realize the curt ulative va y of decorating enough to get organizaton of local safety councils has recently been advocated by ontario s jiton y general as an assist to the provinces campri gn to cut accident fatalities such safety council could play some part m accident prevent on but they would have to have a much more generous assist from the law which m all too many respects is antiquated where if concerns pun shment for traffic volatiors for it is sad but true that it is eas er to convict 0 oank robber than to adequately punish a drinking dn ver and the la s harsher agains one who steals property than against one who ma rrs or k ms a huran being ever day the da ly paper headline u dents wheh end in violent death and in all too many of these use of ntox cants plays a mapr part one does not have to be a teetotaller or a temp erance advocate to hope that sensible drink and drive laws w ii someday curb the drinking driver who under present regulations after a fatal icci dent pays only a fe hu idred dollars penalty strongest curb to drinking drivers that we could suggest would be a blanket law which makes it ar offence to handle a motor vehicle wh le under the influence to be sure t would not be necessary to charge every driver who has had a glass of beer any more than we stop every h ghvay driver who exceeds the speed limit but if the law was on the books it could be used and no argument could be presented that a n an is no drunk if he only had a couple of beers and a drinking driver would have to be prepared to pay his penalty if charged on second thought maybe local safety rnun eds are the answer for if enough such groups were formed and f enough collective pressure was placed on the lawmakers to consider this type of legislation we might get somewhere with ontario s hard to convict traffic laws pot pourri
