to georgetown council undoubtedly our council sincere ly believe they have brought pro gress and prosperity to george town in one sense perhaps they have certainly it has grown in population to a great extent it has been modernized on paper it is booming it looks good and sounds good but is it as good as it appears leis look at the other side of the picture georgetown was what might be termed a family town there was work in the local industries not only for the older citizens but for the young folk too people enjoyed their homes and gardens which in many instances extended to two or more lots the town had a natural beauty in its treelined streets children received a good education and could attend school in comparative safety a call to the mayors office usually brought results where necessary town re pairs were needed it was quiet and peaceful hut by no means a dead town church and other organizations wore busy and active in community affairs improvements were needed and would have been made in keep ing with the gradual growth of the community senior citizens could live without worry as to the future on the financial provision they had made for their later s or on the pension to which they were entitled ic picture has changed and today in the name of progress these aie the conditions under which our people have to live almost overnight efforts have been made to turn georgetown into little toronto before its ti ith the result that at present it is neither one thing or the othi whole streets of new homes have been built cheek by jowl without rresponding influx of new dustnes result increase in taxes over crowding of schools neglect road and sidewalk maintenance in the older parts of the town de- uding of natural beauty through rec removal decreased standard of living and forced sale of proper- 1 ty by elder citizens and forced lea ving of town to secure work by our youth the lowering of our educa tional standard due to overworked teachers and slandered hours a danger hiaid lo our children through increased traffic travel ling at higher speed it lias been said elder residents benefit through rising value of their property that is true to a certain extent but how much do property owners benefit when because they have to live on a fixed income thej cannot pa the inn cased taxes phis inirease cost and arc forced in sell pnt of that property the piocceds from winch in a few etrs the jil t the town in in creased taxes on the home that is left in two or thiee years they will be forced to sell the home and find lodging in some one elses home these are the people who woiked hard in their jnunger years lo piovide a home and income for their oldage in the community they helped to build and that is progress at the other end of the ladder we have the children and young people how is progress affecting them the children have to get up ear lier and to walk farther over bro ken sidewalks dodge heavy trucks and speeding traffic lo a school which can only educate them for part of the daj with teachers over tired through overwork for the ng people there is little oppor tunity at home no new industries withdrawable any time 5 opens an account 5year guaranteed investments 100 and up haltonpeel trust savings company oakville over woolworths a s nicholson president 0 e manning general manager assets exceed 1555000 have been brought in to give them work the only industrial expansion has been provided by the local industries that have grown up with the community so our young peo ple have to leave home whether they want to or not to find em ployment in the larger industrial areas there is much more that could be said but space is limited progress is a good thing when it is geared to the tempo of the people and balanced development i of the community this has not been the case in georgetown progress if such it can be called has been too fast and unbalanced therefore people suffer unncos- sar hardship no one wants or expects the town lo stand still but it is expected that the men j elected to council should protect j the interests of all residents this could and should be done by passing and enforcing a bylaw that limits the ovcrde velopmentl of residential areas without thej needed industrial expansion industry is the balance that equalizes the home owners tax burden and provides him with the work he needs to earn his living without a sensible plan of such dual development no true pro- s can be made and eventually the whole community suffers lets stop looking at statistics and patting ourselves on the back lets look at the people the lord made us into human beings s stop think and treat people as such consideration for individual is always in order georgetown lloyd marks travel notes call tr 73271 tr
