member of the canadian weekly newspaper association and the ontario division of the c w n a remembrance day and poppies remembrance day and poppies are closely linked and this weekend georgetown will again honour its war dead in the customory manner on saturday taggers will be on the streets and calling door to door asking donations to the poppy fund a national fund for veterans admin stered locally by a group of civic minded citi zens the poppy campaign has heavy legion sponsorship but its good works are not restne ted to legion members in fact according to campaign officials 70 percent of the assistance given is to non legionnaires the poppy is significant in three v ays it provides aid or disabled veierans and this troubled old world dependents or for those in temporary or perm anent need it provides employment for handicapped veterans in factories where poppies ana wreaths are prbduced in quantity and it serves as a symbol of rememorance as fold in john mccrae s famous poem there should be no one this weekend who does not proudly wear a poppy to honour can ada s men who sacrificed their lives in two world wars and in korea there should be no one who does not attend the solemn service at the cenotaph early sunday afternoon if you re like us you almost hate to pick up a da ly paper or hear a newscast these days with headl nes screaming of british french inter vention in the israeli egyptian war the soviet march into hungary where patriots tried to throw off a foregn yoke continuing trouble in cyprus and possibilities of an uprising in east germany it is a sadly mixed up affair particularly in egypt the british parliament is far from un animous in ts action the united slates taken by surprise in the midst of an election campaign has issued a conflicting series of statements and opinions canada has kept in the middle of the road hesitating to either condone or condemn military action while suggesting that aun police force restore order russia has suggested that she and the states should intervene on egypt s behalf we like to be optimistic and hope that those in britain and france who have all the facts at their disposal have done the r ght thing and sugar and spice this week the herald begins a new feature sugar and spice written by bill smiley bill is editor of the wiarton echo up in bruce county for several years he has been regaling his readers with the doings of himself and fami y which includes two children columnist sm ley often pretends to be an old man but he is really in his thirties some weekly editors age rapidly the person bill refers to as the old girl is h ractive wife their children a boy and a pot pourri the front page pulled a pne boner last week in reporting the wrong lady golf champion at north halton mrs john bell was top winner this year rather than mrs norman marchment as reported the information was taken from a golf club bulletin which listed mrs marchment first as winner of the barclay trophy turned out this is a new handicap trophy while the straight prize for a flight the mcnally trophy was won by mrs bell sorry another error was pom ted out in the then and now column wherewe tied up the fact that frank ruddell was iniured in an accident 20 years ago with as we thought his present illness in hamilton hospital it is brother fred who is ill then and now is dif ficult to keep free of error as we found a few weeks ago reporting that rev arthur dayfoot is a missionary in trinidad a friend tells us that mr and mrs dayfoot returned to canada to visit his mother in british columbia in august and they are now n toronto on furlough where he is taking postgraduate work mr and mrs harry clarke of oakville are the new owners of the cousens farm on the check line lt col cousens former georgetown postmaster and his wife are off for a holiday in the south and expect to be back in town in february sorry to report that their action rather than fomenting a world conflict may save one from starting it is too big a problem for the ordinary man to even have any sensible opinion and too often the city paper columnists who rush their pronouncements into print are just that ordin ary men whose knowledge is no greater than yours or mine to be factually informed we suggest that one read the straight news reports from the large press associations such magazines as news week time saturday nigwt the better english newspapers if you can get them from recognized sources one can then per haps form an opinion as for the millions of words being ground out by columnists and re porters the quotes from everyone from em bassy doormen to marilyn monroe read them by all means but don t take every word for gos pel girl are healthy specimens that get into the same kind of misch ef and enjoy the same fun as all kids with his particular brand of wit bill smiley puts into words the feelings many of us have about everyday happenings readers of a doz en ontario newspapers are now enjoying this column and we hope you ii like it too turn to page 4 second section for this weeks sugar and spice the continued illnesses of law partners sybil bennett mp and leroy dale a council
