body said ct gray indicating he would devote his entire attention to the job if elected for another term how long does it take to have something done when you ask for it asked a ratepayer w o brownridge mr brownridge said he had asked council in 1951 to repair a sidewalk in front of his house and was still waiting for it another ratepayer mrs alex calder asked about a sidewalk in the park district to connect with that on maple ave she said chil drcn have to walk through muddy sections on their way to school mr gray said it would be ne ccssary for residents to petition council which would then give their request consideration wants 2 way radio cr alfred sykes reported both for his own welfare light and police committee and for vetcr ans affairs and firemen which committee had been headed by tht late lcroy dale the general cfflcicncj of the police force is excellent hi said and he suggested that in future a 2 way radio would be helpful on both the police car and the fire truck the town has added 100 street lights this year and now has a total of over 400 he said 1 ve heard at several count il meetings that we need still mon and i agree with you he continu cd he pointed out also that be cause some areas have becom built up since installation o street lights there ore place where fixtures should be changed to be more cffettive welfare wis dismissed with the happy report of a 0 21 cxpendi ture which he hopes will never he exceeded in future yeirs good fir equipment purchase of a 21000 fire pum per this ear has made the oeor getown diparlment the mos of mir 200 as a candidate for your 1957 council i would like briefly to ex preis my reasons for asking your support in the coming election our debenture debt is almost 2 million this represents a per cap tfe debt of approximately 400 we must realize there are maor expenditures such as schools waterworks sewers etc that must be debntured but we must also realize that we must carry on our taxes such expenditures as sidewalks storm sewers etc and we must not overburden ourselves with too much of this type of pro gress in any one year with this method of f nancing and with the debt that has alreidy i i nth been incurred we certainly cannot expect to see a low tax rate for m r ni 1977 some years to come but we should see with careful municipal ad ik otillim i the growth of h ministration a gradual improvement in trie economic structure of dm titin im urn of 2280 n georgetown i i m wo 1 d 270 there has been much said about the industrial growth of george town and th s we real ze is the salvation of our economy it has been proven as ratepayers we cufinot leave the eshblishmcnt of industry in the hands of delrex developme its alone we mu t have ava lable in othr parts of to a serviced land at a reasonable cost to attract ndu rial sts i aiv you to udqort the rr on r law for the renovat on of our arena although tins v ii add si 1 1 000 to the debenture debt i feel sure the board of parks management can put th s on a pacing ba is and repay this debenture w thou any idd lion to our tax nte it is essenial to the people of georgetown to have a recreil on centre that can be used twelve months of the year and al o real ze the full value of money ve already hove nve ted in th i bu id ng in view of the fact that the large amount of innexed land could place a tremendous burden on the tixpayers who hive been piymq taxes for many years i would consider it my duty v me tir er of the council to be very cautious in future spending until th an it ed area has produced a substantial amount of ndustry with your supoort on election day i feel confident i cm render a useful service to the people of georqeov i ginally scheduled to be ready in december would be opened some time in january delayed at first by a steel shor tage there has been a further de lay caused by shortage of glass and the building is 3 weeks be hind schedule dont suppose any board has been so unpopular with parents as ours he said but believe me we explored all possibilities be fore deciding on a 2 shift school this term explains planning board a new report at the meeting as that of the planning boord formed during the year and given by chairman edwin ymson wilson defined the function of the board to continuously survey the towns assets study ind correlate them and make re commendations to council which will result in orderly devclop- ment of georgetown the board has had problems solved some of them and he bespoke tolerance and consider ation from residents while the board tries for the best solution of problems arana financing the proposed 111000 arena re modelling will be entirely financ ed by the 1 mill grant which the board of parks receives from the tax treasury and profits from operating the building said har old mcclure speaking for the parks board the building constructed some s5 years ago is basically a fine structure but must be put in proper repair or it cannot con tinue operating he siid a 30 000 debenture for artificial ice has been paid off in 9 years and a 15 year debenture for improve merits is planned to be retired in similar fashion a jtarly cust of 11 hoard reports jiontludid town clerk loiin i i he and street signs on councils pro gram next year sidewalks in the east georgetown area and street lights at the highway inter sections are also suggestions he has to improve the town georgetown will have to have industrial development if taxes are to be kept reasonable he believes admitting that he has no solution for new industry other than persistent effort does mr hardie say the most important thing is to keep taxes down was a question posed by a ratepayer r c warren who said mr hardie had contradicted all his points mr hardie said that one of the reasons he is running is to have some representation in council from the eastern section of town presently not represented and that he thinks the town should be split into wards offering to answer mr warren s questions if he posed them one at a time the meeting chairman interrupted and said he thought answers had been adequately made for a unlud town candidate john elliott said georgetown is too small to be divided into the old town and thtj new subdivisions and that he seeks to represent the whole town ivc no axe to grind 1 ve been to council on several occasions and 1 know there s a lot of work and im prepared to do it he said mr elliott sounded an economy note sayint that with a 2 million dollar debenture debt and bank loans of 450 000 georgetown must pull in its horns and spend only what is absolutely necessary he said he would try through the cnr development department to bring new industry giving a brief biography of himself he said he is most happy as a
