and chairman of the parks and planning council was guest speaker at the warden s dinner at which ilatton s 1956 warden and georgetown b reeve stan allen was host the retiring warden his wife and daughters june and sharon included a number of local offl cials in the party which also in eluded present and past county council members with whom mr allen has served past wardens ind county officers special guests were members of the junior far mer debating and judging teams who brought provincial honours to hallon this year reeve archie service of nassa gaweya presided at one of the most pleasant features of the evening when he presented a handsome leather chair to the warden as a token of appreciation from his fellow councillors the warden was toasted by ro bert marshall retiring reeve of trafalgar who spoke of the ex cellent direction he has given county affairs during his term in office in his reply mr allen said it had been an honour to himself i and to the town he represents to hold office and paid tribute to his wife for her patience and under standing during a year crowded with meetings which kept him away from home so much mr allen outlined a few county improvements of which he is proud these including completion of an addition to ha it on centen nial manor and building of a new registry office continuation of a road surfacing program and a hospital survey which while nnt yet entirely acceptable to all municipalities is a start in the right direction guest speaker mr young warn ed of the pitfalls of expanding municipalities in north york a zoning by law had not come soon enough he said we had 100 000 population be fore our zoning bylaw was pass ed he said and today we arc paying the price for waiting too long he pointed out the advantage of foreseeing large traffic arteries and requiring buildings to be set back before an area grows up yonge st is an example where a present mane highway should be widened but cannot be done be cause stores line the whole high way he spoke particularly of drain age saying people sometimes for get that water runs downhill north york he said has water shortages in the summer while beset with surplus water in the rainy season don t push extension ahead of services was his warning remind ing those present that building should not be allowed without sewers and watermains installed at the same pace mr young was introduced b thomas millward reeve of bronte and thanked by william card oakville reeve assessment commissioner jos gibbons was dinner chairman and in his opening remarks stressed the importance of gatherings like the wardens dinner where people from all parts of the county meet form friendships and increase the spirit of goodwill through halton mr gibbons introduced head tabic guests and county officials while warden allen introduced county council members and his georgetown guests the toast list also included a toast to county council proposed by judge w n robinson with newcomers when the 1957 georgetown council con venes in january on monday councillors garfield mcgilvray walter gray harry hale and alfred sykes were re elected in that order by the town voters fred harrison and em hyde were in fifth and sixth place to complete the council roster mayor jack armstrong reeve stan allen and deputy reeve doug sargent received acclama tions at the nomination meeting as did hydro commissioner gra ham famell and public school trustees stan finlay ray salter and cecil mcnamara a vote on a 111 000 debenture issue for arena remodelling re ceived a substantial majority on monday with 725 in favour the no vote registered 376 irwin noble a member of this years council did not stand for election and another councillor leroy dale q c died last month defeated candidates in the elec tion were john elliott sam reid and sid hardle an estimated 40 of the 3151 qualified voters turned out at the polls on monday some 1300 last year s 1350 voters represented 50 of the voters in 1949 and 1951 when there were contests for the top muniei pal offices voting was much hca vier the 1951 elections saw 1372 at the polls or 70 in 1949 when the town was much smal ler 1503 people voted in a record election garfield mcgilvray was almost 100 votes ahead in the council race heading the polls with 971 as he has done on several occa sions walter gray had 885 harry hale 822 alfred
