myself as i brought forth v biggest and f best weapon again pancake failure from its storage place in the cupboard an electrictrylng pan l felt ojutte confident really actually i had never had any trouble with anything sticking to the electric frying pan even scrambled eggs besides some experts bad been thoughtful enough to include the correct temperature on the ther mostat tor cooking pancakes gad this was one time i was going to enjoy the pancakes too and i was going to be one pancake up on healthy appetities this time i mentally patted myself on the back an i turned the oven- on to warm ready toreceive the first batch auid hotctu hot and tasty for he first serving as soon as i heard the car door slam signalling the arrival home of the master of the household x lightly olted the heatedfrying pah with masola then citation tempering my optim ism slightly i poured one hlob of raw pancake mixture into a corner of the pan just for a trial true- to directions i hovered over a ainth all the little a bubble had burst time to turn it over turner in hand i pried gently at tie outer edges there was no live bearing down- and giv ing one mighty push i did get the turner right through the pancake to the other side but something had gone wrong for the entire browned part of the pancake was sttill stuck to my lovely electric frying pan the anemic looking crumpled spongy mass i held on the turner had no resemblance to a pancake disappointment filled me as i chucked it into the gar bage the thermostat must be wrong the pan must be too hot i would try a whole batch with it turned down 20 degrees his time i had to throw five pancakes into the garbage fifteen minutes had elapsed by this time my family were all seated expectantly and hungrily at the table watching the proceedings theres be no need for the heated oven i could see that 1 was also beginning to see something else i was beginning to see red ga and i started to talk in a fast and uncomplimentary manner about pancakes in general mine in particular well shrove tuesday has ma than keeping pace with my come and gone again thisi d feet as i flew around year pancake day the u kitchen all offers of help nemisis of my cooking career having been spurned the family need i say that after barydflt and waited in a more or less ing my culinary sufferings stunned state as i announced that in chatting last year many fellow cooks expressed sympathy any many were the helpful hints i received so that the same diffi culties would not occuragain my biggest trouble if you can recall was that the pancakes persisted in sticking to the pan i also exper- iflenced production troubles pro ducing hot pancakes for five from a pan which could only cook four they were to wait at the table un til i had produced an edible batch of pancakes if it took all night the poor dears as i put the electric frying pan to soak i quickly got out my copperbottomed one this one i rubbed over with a raw potato see i did remember a hint in went the pancake batter just one and it stuck over to the at a time made the going a little sink and garbage disposal i flew rough exhausting in fact so again i tried it with shorten- you can understand why a whole ing instead of potato this time year has passed by since i last remembering another trick i ad- tried my hand at making pancakes dcd a small quantity of cooking oil only was also getting siesta the afternoon of the scheddder and madder and more dc- ulcd pancake supper so i would tcrroned be well rested for the ordeal dur ing my rest i busied my mind with planning just how i would go ab out making pancakes for my family this year without all the muss and fuss of yesteryears- after all it should be simple orangiza- tion was likely the biggest part of the answer also i would try as many of the tips for making nonsticking pancakes that i could remember i could just hear my my family saying with admiration well it wasnt so hard this year was it mum lets have pan cakes often my pancake supper would be smoothly efficient this time g so well in advance of the supper hour i started putting niy plans into effect out came the mix the required amount of milk measured into the measuring cup the bowl in which to mix it and the jug from which to pour the batter into the pan thered be no messy splatters of batter this year then the table was set with plenty a last help ful hint a friend had given me after my last years debacle it could be the mix you know said she so it could i decided in desperation out came the bis- quick the egg the milk and a clean bowl and pitcher i mixed up the batter in jig time pulled out my last clean frying pan from the storage bin an old cheap tin one in went the shortening and when i thought the time was ripe i poured in a whole batch of pancakes this i privately decided was to be the last ditch all or nothing when the little hubbies broke i poked the turner gingerly under the edge of one it slid under easy as wink and over it flipped to reveal a side conked to a beautiful crisy brown success at last my poor half starved family all but gave three cheers as they field out their plates they didnt care if the kitchen was a vast wel ter of sticky bowls and fdlying pan tcr of stick bowls pitchers and frying pans an neither did i i had certainly got into it this year but thank goodness 1 had got out of if too after about six months when time has erased the scars from my nervous system who knows i may try again in fact my dream did come true gosh mum said- one of my mop pets now that youve found the right
