georgetown 1957 ont j bh paints hardware jtitcttai ffiesstar- ies vfrizr v dear editor for this past sixteen years i have lived in this community and found my neighbours to be wholehearted nd geperous peaceloving people willing to uphold the principles of human decency in all cases and i would venture to say that they would regard me as the same unfortunately we have discover ed a black sheep in the fold and one that has no better desire than to dump or have dumped as i should say at his neighbours door that he has noj desire to stop or take it to his own this in my op inion and all afflicted with this un godly mess is poor christianity to all concerned and responsible for it the papermill with their life time experience has yet to find a permanent way of disposing of this waste other than making a brain- jess nuisance out of themselves by imposing on others by dumping it in this thickly populated commun ity what you wont find at thqir own either and for our township council which should never have allowed it in this community as our guardians should be they are acting like models in public serv ice and for our milton health dept- we have to be stunk out be fore their modesty is shocked i have asked that this be stop ped first by the man dumping se cond by the milton health depart ment and thirdly by our township council but tp no avail so as it concerns me briefly i will speak briefly on it and still endeavour to have it stopped apd covered over at the expense of those responsi ble this should be done by our council if they had not the desire to nurse and foster such action when the good lord placed us on this earth with a free will he also endowed us- with a conscience to gujdc us and deliver us from all evil if we so desire so it would be well for us to examine them and find out that we are not living in a fools paradise putting jast things first or turning a deaf car to anhonest request no matter how important or supreme we might be a word to the wise and a good thought to keep in mind daily for the short time we are here is hat the good lord keeps watch over ah and we wlh be mighty obedient vhen death knocks at our door ken mcmillan elected 1st ernment found the way to lar ger incomes many years ago let us recall some federal bud gets introduced by the liberal government 1952 excise taxes were re moved in some cases and re duced in others resulting in a loss of income to the federal treasury of 80 million income tax was reduced by s40muligji total redaction in ledtaral in come was 120 million or 120 million was left in the hand of the taxpayer 1953 do you remember this budget radio and tv licences and cheque stamp lax abolished at a loss to the federal treasury of 18 million the 20 de fence surtax was dropped and lose furniture clothing in sudden farmhouse fire a fire friday afternoon gutted two rooms of a small house on the 5th line owned by jack mcdonald the suddenness or die outbreak gave the occupants mr and mrs rudy waukey no chance to save any of their belongings mr wauk- is employed as hired man on the mcdonald farm when the firemen arrived the house was a mass of flames and most of the destruction had already been done using the heavy equip ment from the township truck the brigade had the blase under con trol in a matter of minutes in ad dition to the two rooms and fumit- lure a portion of the roof was also destroyed the personal income taxes were cut by 237 million corporation tax on small businesses was cut by 35 million excise tax on tobacco was cut altogether federal revenues were reduced by 361 million annually almost one million dollars per day this budget left 361 million annually in the hands of the taxpayer 1954 further reductions in sales and excise taxes on such items as electrical appliances fishing rods and reels cameras and films hand bags toilet goods cosmetics automobile tires and tubes 1955 there was a 12 reduction in income tax for 85 of cana dian taxpayers uhoscwith incomes under 500000 this left about 85 million in the hand of the taxpayer available for personal spend ing or investment corporation income tax was cut by 2 excise tax on passenger automobiles reduced to 10 from 15 and re moved entirely on automobile tires and tubes on all material used in the manufacture of feed for poultry cattle and fur bearing animals on materials used in the production of terrazzo flooring floor tile and wallpaper i 1956 the earlier tax concessions had created in all canadians a sense of prosperity and well being the canadian economy was booming and the most striking change in the canadian economy had been the increase in consumer expenditures total sales of consumer goods and services had increased by 7 twice as much as in 1954 in his budget speech mr harris said consequently in times like the present when private expenditures are expected to rise still further the federal governmnt itself has a special responsibility to see that its fiscal policies continue to be directed toward economic stability following this line of thought there were no tax concessions in the 1956 budget 1957 the canadian economy had expanded more than had been anticipated the gross national product had increased in a year by 11 spending by canadians on goods and services had again increas ed this time by 8 the personal incomes of canadians nad expand ed by 2 billion in 1956 it was estimated that the high level of acti vity in the canadian economy would continue increases were granted in old age security old age assistance family allowances war veterans allowances and pensions there were no income tax re ductions but larger personal deductions were permitted for the first time the individual may deduct from income the premiums he pays for certain retirement annuities sales and excise taxes were removed on some grocery items and other items resulting in a loss of revenue in the amount of 128 million annually here arc some figures in 1952 canadians had savings deposits in canadian banks and other financial institutions totalling 4822 million in 1955 it was 6196 million in 1950 canadians bought life insurance at the rate of 113 million monthly in 1956 that monthly rate was 275 million in 1953 the amount of life insurance in force in canadwas 21319 million or 1441 per capita in 1956 the figures stoodat 26000 million or 1645 per capita and if figures mean nothing to you just take a look at that atomic powered eight with the juke box styling and the rainbowhued colour ing standing there in the lane sec commercial letter of the canadian bank of commerce for februarymarch 1957 article entitled account rendered a 5 percent increase in the employed labour force wide spread wage increases and a substantial increase in farm income combined to raise total personal in come by about 2 billion or 10 percent about to percent of this increase was absorbed by higher per sonal expenditures and 10 percent by increased tax payments the remaining 20 percent went into in creased personal savings which rose from about 860 million in 1955 to 1260 million in 1956 there must have been some raises in pay somewhere along the line that statement could have been more honestly put for example how to get another raise in pay k y dick liberal candidate for haltcm county published by halton county liberal association i r 1
