an advancing organization steady growth of the local canadian legion new portion of the building it wijl continue to branch has encouraged a major project in purch ase of property adjoining the present legion hall which will provide room for any foreseeable future expansion of the organization ownership of the large structure which t in a block of valuable downtown acre age could only have been dreamed about by those early organizers who after keeping solv ent with a series of fundraising events after the branch was chartered in 1928 started legion his tory in rented quarters over the present grand- union carrolls store by 1935 the branch was on such a firm footing that a portion of the wil- loughby block was purchased subsequently the building has undergone a series of improve ments which has created one of the finest leg ion buildings in ontario with large downstairs lounge and an upstairs auditorium much in de mand for banquets and dances no immediate plans are in the offing for the be rented until such time as legion membership swells to such a pojnt that the present hall is in adequate if this happy state is reached it is to be hoped that it is by membership increase among present war veterans and- not by those of any future conflict in fact the happiest state we could imagine at some future date would be the disintegration of the whole legion organization for lack of qualified membership in a peaceful world where war veterans are the exception rather than the rule pending this utopian world however we can be thankful that men and women who served their country in wartime have banded together to help not only themselves but the community at large and we congratulate the foresight of an organization which looks to a steadily expand ing future in georgetown no need to charge water a council discussion monday on arrears of water payments should call for a tougher pol icy by council on those who consistently are be hind in paying their wafer bills at present if payment is not made within four months the householder is threatened with cutoff action unless the bill is settled cheapness of the commodity should obviate any need for time payments in any but the most extreme cir cumstances and we can see no particular need to give even four months of grace to a delinquent property taxes are another question and there are often extenuating circumstances which must be taken into account when a man gets be hind irl payments the town in this case has some protection too for there is always an equi ty in fheproperty quite the contrary with wa ter oncirtne service has been given and the after all in a sandwich its tub meat that matters 0 back home again after our three weeks at inver- huron beach and would that i could add back into rou tine again its working up on me gradually thought and by this time next week our summer holi day will likely seem long ago and business section lent a festive at mosphere and the stores were very busy on the way home we got a kick out of seeing a painter paint ing an extremely high flag pole with the aid of the fire depart ments truck and ladder quite a crowd had gathered to see him perched up at the very top of the longest ladder to complete his tri cky job still farther on the way home id say about ten miles from owen sound we saw a strikingly beauti ful waterfall cascading down a large rock escarpment it was no small trickle but a good wide rush of water falling a great height i it doesnt pay you should advertiser the canvasser told the proprietor of a small neighbourhood store no sirl im agin it was the emphatic answer but why advertising dont leave a man no time the man replied i tried it once last year and i was so doggope rushed i couldnt get in no fishin all summer cry year when we return i miss looking at the lake with its ever- changing- moods watching the wuer seems to create a pleasant vacuum in my water usedjhere is nothing short of a court order the wav whether era- shing rolling or merely lapping far away not that home doesnt hold many charms in the summer- asked a couple of district people time too but for a little while cv- what the name of the falls would which can gouge money from an unwilling tax payer water should be treated exactly the same as hydro no one expects this public utility to be lenient no payment no power new disposal plant necessary no quarrel can be found by any ratepayer in councils decision to proceed with plans for a new sewage disposal plant to serve the growing needs of an expanding town every angle of the problem has been exam ined by the town council and they have now dec ided to ad on the advice of the authorities who have pointed out that it would be foolish to spend half a million dollars extending the present plant when a new one which would operate more ec onomically will cost not too much more it is a presentlessing that the newly form ed water resources commission is available to help in financing over the rough road ahead no matter how urgent the need it would be impos- lulliog me into a sort of stupor a wonderful way to relax so you may have guessed that i will not be treating any aerious subject in our little chat this week 0 owe vagrant thought did wander thru my head one day however when i was busy gazing at the lake why be but they had never even seen ft let alone heard about it per haps it was much larger than nor mally because of the heavy rains the previous weekend anyway it was a lovely sight f quite a common sight along the less travelled cou ntry roads were people out picking wild strawberries the berries were plentiful this year but in the case of roads that had leen sprayed with weedkiller the berries had an unpleasant taste especially noticeable after they had been preserved so we didnt sible to float close to a million dollars in deben tures to pay for a new plant it would be equally impossible to sell debentures in any large quan tity for any plant addition at any sensible rate of i where does the partingofwaves intereset so without the commission george- now tnere pling do the waves break toward the encourage the children to go berry shore on both the canadian and picking this year american sides of the lake or on both sides of any sizeable body of water for that nutter and i town would be in a position where expansion of any kind industrial or residential could not be allowed financing under the resources commission is of course only a temporary measure and the money will have to be found someday for the project but a few years delay is of extreme value to a town like georgetown today and will help it over a transition period which marks a turning point in the towns history puzzling nature question that stumped ev eryone i asked up at the beach realizing they were all probably in the same state of inertia men tally and physically as myself i made due allowances for them but i will be disappointed indeed if noone in georgetown can prov ide me with an explanation i dont want to he bothered by even one little bitsy thought when im wave watching next year swimming pool a boon promotion of the swimming pool by georgetown lions club has been an outstand ing event in community life and one which is paying untold dividends in health and recrea tion for the town tast year children were the primary bene factors and again this season every fine day sees crowds of youngsters splashing about in the large supervised pool but this year addition of a night lighting system has made swimming an adult recreation as well youngsters are shooed out in the early evening to clear the way for the growing numbers of adults who find it a fine way to spend a hot evening one phase idea 0 a couple of ladies at inverhuron were telling me of an idea theyve bad and are putting into practice almost immediately theyre going to conduct theatre tours to toron to similar to the ones advertised for new york its a package deal of two nights at the king edward breakfasts lunch at windstons tickets for the current shows at the royal alex and crest or avenue theatres a matinee at one of the larger movie houses and dinner at a night club all for a quite reas onable fee everything is to be arranged for the client except the transportation to toronto the ladies are going to advertise all over the province i think they have a good idea and if they dont succeed it will probably be only a matter of time before someone else does- toronto has a lot xo offer in the way of theatres restaurants shopping sightseeing etc close the we live there are still many places td like to see in toronto hope the ladies have some luck in their venture enjoying a cup of tea in a neighbours control metropolitan flood control will now be tackled on a regional rather than on a piecemeal basis provided the federal government becomes a contributing member of the team according to a motion passed by metropolitan toronto and region conservation author ity under chairman a h richardson pbng at its meeting held in north york municipal chambers this region said mr richardson includes onetenth of can adas population and has experienced serious flood disaster the money spent in flood relief however including search and rescue work in which the government of canada has participated will not prevent future flood expense moreover control of land use on the flood plains would be tantamount to confiscation of some prop erties unless such private properties were purchased the cost of acquiring the remaining flood plains should be compared with the cost of protecting them authority officials rea son and the cost of flood protection in this region estimated in the order of 30000000 is too great to be assumed by real estate taxpayers i on motion of vicechairman eric w baker a delegation was authorized to discuss this flood control matter with the ottawa gov ernment to give broader representation to this phase of the auth oritys work a new board was appointed to be named the flood and pollution control advisory board under chairmanship of grant henderson delegate from wbodbridge if ottawa concurs and follows precedents set in other areas rhe federal governments share would be 37 per cent with trie provincial government paying a similar proportion and the munici palities paying the balance according to their proportion of bene fit metro council had previously endorsed this regional approach effective flood control said the authoritys chairman means elimination of flood damage by the acquisition of flood plains and the necessary structures to control excessive flood flows and both these methods will be studied and evaluated ottawa may deal with
