including the brant museum in burlington which is at present owned by the department of highways because it is proposed that this land be used for the construction of a hospital we would like to ap peal to you to reconsider your de cision in this matter and at least postpone the completion of the sale of this property until there has been some oportunity for a public expression of opinion in the new amalgamated area of burlington as to whether the site- should be used for duch a purpose elsa neil historical consultant for the humber valley conserva tion authority has appealed on more than one occasion for the preservation of this memorial to joseph brant we agree with her opinion that the use of this site for construction of a hospital will re sult in the elimination eventually of one of canadas most important historic landmarks besides this however there are many other reasons for which the department would be well advis ed to hold up the sale of the repli ca of joseph brants home and the lanfi oil which it stands opposi tion to the idea of locating a hospi tal in his particular area has been strongly expressed in the pages of the local newspaper the bur lington gazette and by the burbngt6atatea planning board by the original factfinding com mittee which was set up to invest igate the matter of a site for the hospital and by the nelson town ship council the township of law- born was engaged until recently in safety work in england and has continued in that type of work in canada since his arrival in the spring he was formerly with the the land which the department of highways proposes to sell is the royal air force only remaining piece of park land in his highly interesting and in this area adjacent to the lake thoughtprovoking talk mr lay- and we agree with many others in born outhned the work carried on burlington that a public park and h tne 0tno safety league and a hospital are not a good combina- m 90ne detail the main items tion under any circumstances ad ded to this however is the fact that recent rulings of the ontario municipal board the building of the skyway and proposed exten sion of harbour facilities in the bay make it very likely that a hos pital built on this land will at some time be within sight and sound of heavy industry if the local opinion had been solidly behind the use of the brant park land in spite of these facts perhaps the department of high ways would have been justified in their decision to sell it but this is of safety they are concerned with he also stressed a number of pro jects that might be particularly sui ted to a town the size of george town one thing he felt that would be of great help was the establishment of a safety patrol to augment the work of the crossing guards he told how such a patrol operated and stressed that in the hundreds of communities where this service was available the patrols have had a 100 per cent safety record some thing that spoke for itself of the value of the patrols mr layborn also told botarians lherkes raycroft trlanau 74941 tr 72461 si guelph st georgetown i t3a far from the ease we hope that of the merits of having a safety you will do questionperlod fol lowing mr layborn gave sonie highly interesting facts about the new traffic violators schools now being conducted particularly in hamilton where the project has become so large that polue officers are conducting classes for violators and for teen agers three nights per week in the case of violators the presiding magistrate may give the offender the option of attending the classes and often times bases his sentence on the outcome of his attendance at the school the pol ice too find a fertile field among teen agers many of whom were instrumental through their requests for it ln
