rayed at the bonne of mrs w f bradley 70 main st s while mrs bradley was away on vacation legion motes by lea clare well the weather picked for the corn roast was really perfect avsidt a big crowd was on hand or it we font think weve ever seen more people there it was held as usual in rtungry hollow and looking arouns we cant think of a better spot for it providing it doesnt rain of course the corn was perfect and the large number of cobs were pol ished off in start order sspksf there was one thing missing in any event that was the usual chief cook for as long as we have been going to the annual corn roast sam tennant has been on the job helping to get oil furnace h inffoifra mwaum wemeialqiiectiic bttgelectrq4ab everything ready and staying until the bitter end to clean up this year unfortunately he couldnt be there however the boys missed ou sam the men in charge did a great job and everyone reported a grand time incidentally no one seemed to want to go or a swim this jear strange isnt if maybe theyre fi nally getting old for a real rogues gallery see the front page of the second section of this weeks herald we didnt real ly think a camera would tahe a group like that but it stood up re markably well the photographer tells us it still works if the paper is a httle late this week incidental ly the reason is an extra long press run weve a standing order for scotty for twenty five copies any time his picture appears and the chap in the background of the pic ture wants the same number tsk tsk such vanit the provincial finals which will see two teams from town entered takes place at rouge hill course on saturday september 28th and is going to be quite a big day we expect to see two full teams going from town m the next regular meeting will be held on thursday september 26th and we expect to see a good atten dance for the tixst meeting of the year the longawaited loud speaking system has been installed by bev moody and is certainly a beauty an amplifier has been placed in the rear of the room and we think that everyone will notice terrific difference in the performance of the new system one comment we might make is that all amateur electronics specialists be not al lowed to fix it when anything is the matter we have always felt that much of the trouble experien ced with the old set could have been eliminated if it hadnt been mixed on too many occasions by too many amateurs stewarttown fifty eight years ago this coming thanksgiving the streets of ac ton biased with bonfines and peo ple who normally retired at a re spectable hour were out to cele brate a heartwarming local vic tory the lacrosse championship after defeating wlarton 6- x in the last game of the oua finals at fergus the triumphant players representing both georgetown and acton came home by train and were cheered by crowds of fans waving and dancing in the rflames of victory bonfires a huge par- ade was formed to escort the team down the main street of- the village it was a night to remenv her with pride andjt members of the 1896 acton lacrosse team recall that occasion and many other sports events as well when they foregather for an hours chat recently the lad who played third home celebrated his eighti eth birthday and his team mate a dangerous man on 2nd home dropped into the house on john street to teminisce about old la crosse days in acton frank mac intosh 8l and eddie ryder 78 were not only members of the same teams but friends as well one young man was rarely seen without the other they share a wealth of memories about their experiences in local sports which included baseball and hockey and in mcintoshs case running for which he won numerous me dais besides playing lacrosse for ac ton ryder and macintosh hoist- erf their sticks for gait midland and woodstock i suppose he could write a book about those old days declared macintosh eddie do you remember the time we played the tuscarora indians in 1898 eddie ryder remembered hail ing from a reserve at caledonia the tuscarora indians swept on to the lacrosse field fierce and colorful with long tangled locks and uniforms decorated at strate gic points mostly on the seat of the shorts long shorts in those days with buffaloes and totem poles they were a wildlooking crew but we licked them in 1901 playing for gait the two local athletes met headon with the touring oxfordcambridge la crosse team whose players were described as fine big fellows the pick of the two english colleges who could have made two of ed die or myself who won the canadian team of course but when mcintosh and ryder reminisce mostly in their memories is that provincial championship of 1899 and the smaller triumphs that lead to it first the acton team had to beat gait and fergus in the royal district cla fergus they agree- ed had a fine team and both players remember some of the men they tangled with stubby graham doc kyle tar sye sox clark hopper forrester grundy forrester tool gough and eddy curliss a great bunch of nick names observed mcintosh of the acton players only ryder and mcintosh and car williams are still living and in george town dr frank watson who plaj ed goal for acton in the semifinals of the 1898 season acton had to polish off st marys and beaverton before meeting the wiarton team at fergus those were great days declared both frank mcintosh and eddie ryder id like to be liv ing them over again pages wednesday breg sep 4th 1987 the georgetown herald save money with these backtoschool values freshbake white crecked wheat whole
