mannber of the canadian weekly newspaper association and the ontario division of the cwna shopping centre coming short news items in the city papers last week about a proposed shopping mart in geor getown cause more local comment than we have heard in many a day to those who expressed surprise that the herald carried no story we can say that the news was just as much a surprise to us as to anyone this week we have made enqdlries and our story appears elsewhere in this issue the shoppingmart idea irv itself is not new news of course it is an integral part of the plan ned community which the delrex organization blueprinted when it first came to town and land was earmarked for it from the first the story is- not as uncomplicated as the city newspapers have it a business proposition of the magnitude contemplated does not come over night as yet the shoppirvg mart is hardly out of the idea stage and there will be months and ev en years of preliminary work- before any maor construction will come we woo id guess our conjecture is that the realtors are trying to interest a number of maor retailers in locating in georgetown as the major town of thefuture in this area the daily paper story is one phase of such promotion they have made a survey which they are using as a sales story big retailers do not buy blind and they will be making their own surveys consulting together weighing george towns advantages against those of other towns before coming to any decisions they will be watching georgetowns residential and industrial growth checking every form of statistic for a big company cannot afford to make mistakes whether georgetown will see a five or six million dollar plaza in the next few years is still a matter of conjecture what is certain is that as the town 3 there will be more retail stores and it would be logical that new merchants would be drawn to locations where a large bulk of the population is closer to their stores enlargement of the georgeview plaza might be more in the immediate future than any large scala develop ment on a new site though that is bound to come in time ajso hornby v institute plans function to mark 50th birthday thest stephens over 4o0 shown in the report of assessment commissioner joseph gibbons to council last week does not reveal the whole picture of this fastgrowing town aar gibbons figures compiled in septem ber shows georgetowns population as 66787 compared with 6257 as of a year ago with some 7q houses presently under construction in the newer section of town it doesnt take a mathe matician to realize that the yearend should see georgetown pass 7000 which is more than tri ple the population fifteen years ago as ed sullivan would say were getting reeeir big reeely b1gi those who have been on the scene of such expansion are conscious of the change from small town to big town status and some are prone to say georgetowns getting too big which would be a laugh to people in toron to or guelph and would even make a brampton s lan g rin for we have a long way to go trouble is we guess that no one can say ust what is the perfect sized community a person in a large city things a small city would be ideal a man in a town of 10000 thinks a town half that size the perfect place communities which have been static for years are wishing desperately for an increase in population towns which are going ahead numerically have people who wish things would stand still 1 is human tiature we suppose to resent too rapid change we get used to living in one house to eating certain types of food to certain set routines and it takes a while to get used to new ideas if you are one who wishes george town would stop growing all we can say is youll get used to it and surprisingly one day youll find that you like things the way they will be historic business change announcement this week of the sale of the beaumont knitting milk by arthur beaumont ends an 80 year family association covering three
