l i- kmjktefn pages wednesday evtning october mth 1957 fust section what council did council planning board disagree on maple ave zoning action criticism of a planning board decision turning down remising of a property on maple avenue was expressed by several councillors at mondays council meeting the decision concerned a proper ty backing the georgetown dairy bernard cassell representing east on which council had given an op tion to sell for 2500 to al norton who plans to erect a commercial building when mr norton first approached the council some time ago it was thought the property was in a commercial zone but it was later discovered that it is resi dential in the proposed town xon- ing council then asked mr nor ton to submit his proposal to the planning board which declined to make a zoning change cr era hyde argued strongly for the norton building council has said only recently that a house can be built in the backyard of a town property and cannot stop se midetached houses he said but in this case is being sticky cr garfield mcgilvray expressed the opinion that the town needs commercial assessment that maple ave is a busy street and can see no advantage in keeping that por tion of it residential reeve stan allen agreed saying that tie en visages all guelph street as com mercial someday cr fred harrison drew a strong objection from deputy reeve doug sargent when he asked is this the same planning board that sold normandy blvd down the river a few months ago for a gas station when 96 residents petitioned ag ainst it the deputy reeve who is also a planning board member said he had been against the gas station personally but that it had been a democratic vote and he did not like the reference mayor armstrong said that he has expressed a personal opinion that he is uncertain how effective the town could be in a court of law in refusing any building permit un til the toning bylaw is passed the planning board he pointed out only operates to pass on rec ommendations to council if coun cil wishes to take other action it is free to do so j a request to purchase a vacant lot on normandy blvd by mr mil ler of brampton was turned over to the property committee the lot had originally contained i anil not creating a nuisance for his neighbours this was councils opinion after the question of construction com panies working that day was brought to councils attention by georgetown ratepayers mayor armstrong said it is councils policy to prohibit con mercial building on sundays and this policy followed will continue to be the weather mr editor
