the judging panel at the conclusion of the halton jun iors annual interclub debating and public speaking competitions held in the milton high school on nov ember 8th eight young people participated in the two interclub debates and three in the public speaking k marry top speaker katherine merry of the milton juniors was the unanimous choice of the panel of judges as the top speaker in the public speaking competition mildred watson of ac ton juniors and jack loos of the palermo juniors were the other two contestants each contestant after delivering a ten minute pre pared address then had ten min utes to prepare for his or her three minute impromptu it was a test which many oldsters would hesi tate to tackle but all three young people came through with flying colours miss merry will now represent halton juniors in the intercounty public speaking competition sched uled for toronto in early january farm independence i resolved that farm people arc j losing thier independence was the two neg- i ative teams from milton and nor val respectively secured the deci sion of the judges it was a split decision iii both cases which indi cates that all eight young people did an outstanding job halton juniors were fortunate in having as their panel of judges mrs l c mcquat of milton w e breckon of burlington and george e elliott qc of milton the most difficult task confronting the judg es was to select the four young people who will carry the flag for halton in the 1957 1s58 inter- county debating series at the outset the judges were far from unanimous but in the final analysis four young ladies got the nod namely the misses jean bird barbara cunningham jean peter son and mildred watson this quar tette will tackle wellington coun ty in the first round and the date has been set for tuesday novem ber 26th haltons negative team of barbara cunningham and jean peterson will meet the wellington affirmative team at the court house in milton while haltons af firmative team of jean bird and mildred watson will journey to fergus to lock horns with the wel lingtons negative ontarios farin marketing plans as they effect the farmers indep endence are likely to play a large part in
