participating in a church can vass sunday afternoon it was enligptening and somewhat frighten ing for -an- older georgetowner who because of the- nature of business once thought he knew most people by name to see rows of houses where every face was a svange one and to realize that it is beyond the capacity of any one brain to retain all the new names and faces in a cranial card index after numerous calls we wondered what can be done t6 assimilate new people into the happy stream of life which abounds in a small town for despite those who think georgetown is now a metropolis we are still well within the small town category churches of course can play a major role and sunday saw two churches making a stab at this while religion is the core of church life there is a secoikjary social side in its various organizationsa which can aid newcomers in mak ing friends and getting established there are a variety of organizations frater nal service and social which are here for new comers to join there are public functions con- crts hockey theatre to cater to varied tastes there are stores where new residents can shop without the inconvenience of a long drive and the hordes of people which test the temper of one used to smalltown life there is much that older residents can do to welcome newcomers to our cornmunity we should make every effort to say hello to a stran gers on the street to have a chat when we meet decorate for christrnas so successful was last years home decorat ing campaign by the chamber of commerce that plans are again in progress to have a similar com petition this year the chamber is not seeking to have people spend large amounts of money on decorating some people will invest in coloured lights others will use their ingenuity in clever designs many may just put a wreath on the door or a candle in the window the idea is to spread the christmas fct pourri js circumstances make strange bedfellows so when you see a bazaar in progress in the 1erald office on a future saturday credit it to a wedding it came- about when a church group in which the editors wife participates planned said bazaar on the same day as a wedding reception was sla ted with no other location available we came to the rescue and baking and dolls clothes will re- place the typewriters for that afternoon the blood clinic is one campaign which no one can turn down on the grounds that it will affect their pocketbook it is wonderful to think that your pint of blood might be the one that will save the like of another ifoman being or by coincid ence perhaps even your own a boysdarc familiarly called horse apple brought from fort worth texas by mr and mrs clayton wilson is a curio to most people who view it in the herald window the apple sized greenishyellow mot tled fruit has no
