canadian weekly newspaper association and ma ontario division of the cw n a 18th anniversary eighteen years ago this week we wrote our first editorial compiled our first news stor ies in a town completely strange to us then which has become home the years have dealt kindly with the her aid blessed with faithful coworkers and a fair share of advertising patronage and commercial printing work the business has grown with the town a staff of four turned out a 6 or 8 page edition in those days a 9 man staff now produ ces this 12 to 16 page paper you read weekly in 1940 we wrked in cramped quarters farther down the street where henrys clothing store is now in 1958 we are m quarters four times as large the original machinery has been replac ed with more modern equipment the herald now has two automatic printing presses where once it had none two typesetting machines in place of one a poer paper cutter instead of the old hand guillotine a paper folder where once the whole issue was folded by hand a 2 phone system to take care of the in creasing number of calls in the front office a faster and better newspaper press to print the weekly edition it hasn t been all a bed of roses of course we can remember too the war years when if it hadn t been f victory loan campaigns the herald might have quietly starved to death when we were only sure of two ads sometimes on mondays the gregory theatre and car red cross month march is the month when the red cross ap peals for funds in a nation wide drive and this jyeat agaih georgetown and district will see an intensive campaign spearheaded by an active group of workers who know the many fine ac complishments of this great organization which is equally active in war and peacetime the local fund drive will take place on mon day march 17th as a blitz campaign and peo pie are reminded to be on the lookout that ev ening for a red cross caller locally the ob jective is 2500 less than 50c per person m the community a little help from everyone and there is no doubt that the quota will be easily reached no relief rolls here with talk of recession and unemployment in the daily pngss it is comforting for george town to know that there is not one person at present receiving town relief may this happy state of affairs continue it is a credit to the town s industries that there ore no great ups and downs in employment here and georgetown is most fortunate in hav ing the type of industrial operation which pays a good wage rate with some assurance that a man will be working at his trade 52 weeks a year much as we need more industrial assess merit tt is to be hoped that the new factories which will come in future will be on a par with those we have now while we deprecate most statements- made in the heat of en election campaign and hope that canadas economy is more stable than some daily paper articles would have us believe it is well not to be too much of an ostrich and hide the mail ftag rolls store and when some weeks a 4 page issue could contain as much news as one double that size today because there were so few ad verhsers we can remember at the depth of the manpower shortage a beneficient army tak ing pity on our business plight and allowing us to come home on extended leave when the staff had shrunk to one man and an apprentice and garfield was trying to set type run the news paper press do the ob printing and all the mul titude of work which a printing office entails while the editors wife struggled to do all the front office work and lend a hand where she could in the shop the years have left their mark there was a time when a stranger might say i expected to find an older man when told we were the edi tor thai hasn t happened for a long time now there was a time when we were walt to every body too many people call us mister now there vere tha carefree days when youth allowed us to follow the hockey team on the famous hockey trams when a solid week of i nght meetings didn t faus a whit when there was no grey in the hair or wrinkles in the face but they have all been good years and we savour every minute of them life would indeed be dull if everything was pie and one had no bad times to make the good times seem better were look ng forward to the next eighteen years w th anticipation j we have been asked to relay information aboutj those who contribute to the re3cross at the avro and orenda plants while the money attgoes to the same place it is proper that geor getown residents indicate if giving at the plants there that their donations be credited to geor getown otherwise a large amount of rrjoney might never lie indicated as coming from our town and the campaign figure might be out of proportion with results attained here the local red cross division has been told that it is quite in order for such mformation to be given at matron and the amounts received will then be credited by headquarters to the georgetown objective our heads in the georgetown sand it would seem from studying such reports that canada is after a postwar boom which saw more than full employment returning to an unfortunately more normal state where at limes there will be men out of work and businesses which fail as we reoice in our local prosperity we can ponder an old familiar quotation written by a great eng lish divine john donne over three hundred years ago no man is an hand intire of itself e ev eryman is a peece of the continent a part of the mains if a clod b washed away k by the sea europe is the esse as well as if a promontone were as well as if a ma nor of thy fnende or of thine owne were any mans death diminishes me because i am involved in mankinde and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls it tolls for thee sidewalks not always the answer 86 main st n march 1st dear sir a remark made recently mr young at council that ffij chil dren use shelley st daily path to school and that it is dan gerous for them to walk in the road i most definitely agree 1k per cent but demanding side walks im sorry to say is not com plctely the answer for eliminating this danger as you see by my address i live in a very dangerous area where children going to school or down town with their trucks bikes wa gons etc never think to use the sidewalks provided they prefer the roads the boul evards or peoples front lawns so for me theres a constant fear for tie children that could be stop ped overnight it all the parents would constantly remind their children of this danger i have to for i live on a highway j yours trulj margaret bennett halton
