right on the editorial page of the renfrew advance she fla yed me in rhyme and it was so ad roit polished and witty that it has been reproduced in many pa pers across the country if not the first time ive been attacked by a female no inoeerfy when i was young and in my prim they used to do it all the time in those days i ust relaxed and enioyed if but after more than a decade of marrlaoo i auto- omafically commence apotoglilrtg when im the focal point of a fam ine assault the lady s plaint was entitled the idle of smiley s wife she suggested that while it might be entertaining to read about ft she didnt knowhpw yny woman could put up with the abuse domestic and verbal that my old la- uh i mean my cherished spouse does she further intimated that it jvould be a pleasant change if just once when i mention my wife in this column i said something nice out her before we got any further into this apology girls lefs get one thing clear if anybody gets push ed around at our house it is not my wife and it it not my kids if thafs established i ii accept the challenge and say some nice things about the old bat uh i mean my dear good frau and i can think of real reason she is sometimes treated rather cavaherlj in these columns and i might as well ad mit it is pure jealousy it s the only way i have of getting even in the first place she s young and goodlooking i m neither you shoulfhjhave seen her at the news paper convention we attended last weekend a circle of men around her six feet tall and six feet deep every time i timidly tried to el bow into the ring one of them would snarl the chairmanship of reeve john milne is recommending that the county farm pond policy be continued during 1958 since the policy came into effect six jcars ago a total of 73 farm ponds in halton have been approved under the policy which provides a sub- 5id of fifty per cent of the cost up to a maximum of si 00 this financial assistance is pro vided jointly by the halton coun i council m cooperation with the i ontario department of agricul j ture i in order to quahf for this fin ancial assistance interested farm operators must first make appltc ation before anv construction work begins at the agricultural offict in milton the proposed site is then inspected and if batisfatcor construction work maj commence halton farm operators contempla ting the construction of a farm pond in 1958 should lose no time in filing their applicatoins which arc accepted in the order recti v ed only a limited number of ponds can be approved in any one year and in order tev qualify must have as their objective to prov ide water for either domestic or livestock purposes fire protection or irrigation purposes bugarbutt hlxttmjf wool the government deficiency pay ment applies only on properly dajs of the squeeze in agriculture it is a source of sat isfaction to find that in general dairy herd improvement associ ation members in halton arc forg ing ahead data was recently re ceied from the farm economics branch of the ont dcpt of agn culture which present the compar ative costs and returns of 41 halton dh1a members for the j ear ma 1st 1951 to april 30 1952 and again for the ear may 1 1956 to april 30 195 this re veals that on the average the 41 dhia members hae increased the net e turns from their herds from an average of 502 to 1992 n the five jear period after dc ducting he cost of feed over head and other expenditures in connection with the dair busin ess it is encouraging to note that these 41 halton operators on the average have practical doubted the return per hour for the labour spent on the dairj end of the farm business nothrr feature of the stud rc eals that the se 41 p rators hae on the average cut the fosl of pr tilucing milk bj 59 cents per cwt i were a little disap pointed to note however thil the average production per cow in the fie ear period instead of show trig an increase as we had anticipa led was down 40 lbs per cow on the ears production we cant help but think however that this slight reduction was due to the poor quality hay crop taken off in 1956 and along with this with the exception of those who had tjarry and rodney varieties the quality of the grain crop was poor too the analyses also reveals that the size of herd in the five year period had steppedup from an average of 16cowin the 41 herds to an average of 22 cows along with this the group of 41 had improved in their feeding efficiency labour efficiency and use of capital in shcrt as we sec it the analyses reveals what better farm management practices will do even though many costs such as taxes equip ment etc have increased in the five year period social a personal mrs marion barber 26 edith st is awa on a trip to the bah amas and florida mrs barber who is employed
