thr mostortown hsrald wednesday eraouui june 11 1966 editorial lessee ask the better turning down endorsement of a petition- it is still john poos pocketbook which suffers from another municipality to oin a campaign to get more government assistance for local sewer- age projects council on monday sensed the dang ers of seeking too much control over things which can be handled more efficiently at a local level canada like most countries is already top- heavy with centralized benefits unemployment insurance health insurance subsidies for roads fqr education ech good things in themselves but each addition increases a taxation burden which can- someday become a crlppter for there is no way a government can get money ex cept from the people whether you call it irr- come tax excise tax sales tax or what you will with each new government subsidy and in the equalizing process it is the more prospejrpus parts of a country which carry the heavier load for those less blessed with natures resources it is as one councillor said monday axio matic loo that those who pay the piper call the tune and the larger the contributions from a central authority the more control that body will wish to have over the money expended its not easy to stay off the bandwagon and council acted wisely on monday in filing a peti tion which if successful could eventually add to tax burdens already getting too heavy hard to set a standard contemplated action of council in increas ing meeting fees for councillors and the yearly allowance for the mayor brings the question of how to measure public service in dollars and cents voting a week ago to have a bylaw am endment prepared a 54 maiority favoured in creasing the council fee to 13 an 81 matority the mayors allowance to 1500 in the light of such close voting on an item which will add ap proximately 2500 to the yearly tax bill we sug gest council should give earnest further consid eration before final action is taken in the form of an amendment to the allowance bylaw the question of being paid for hours spent on the job is not one which can sensibly enter public positions like those of councillor school trustee hydro commissioner or the various ap pointed offices on boards which administer such things as the library arena and cemetery one must assume that a man who seeks such office derives his major payment from the sense of ser ving the public with his abilities and time and the social distinction which falls to one who so serves there was a time when financial return for any such office was unheard of like everything time brings changes and it has became an accep ted fact that an allowance for such men is pro per but to our way of thinking it is still an allowance and not a salary a token payment as it were to acknowledge public appreciation for an onerous ob and to overcome any outofpock et expense which the ob might entail one must then be clear on whether council mernbers are to recsjve an allowance or a salary if the latter then the ob should be evaluated and a yearly salary established the same as for any private operation if however it is to remain a token we think the 8 00 per meeting and the 1 000 flat allowance for mayor are ample for the purpose intended l lacrosse star in early georgetown years a georgetown resident before he turn of the century albert edward neale 86 died t ross memorial
