1s74u we were intrigued by an article appearing in the globe and mail a few days ago which quoted a couple of school trustees who had pushed discontinuing the novem her 11th holiday at the annual meeting of ontario trustees one said that she wasnt attacking the canadian legion but there was no need for it as most of the chil dren had no idea what they were connnenorating lady if thats the situation in your community we think it s deplorable and we humbly suggest that ou contact canadian legion headquarters as we are sure they would be happy to send you or any of your col leagues who feel the same as you literature explaining the reason for that day and why most people do like to commemorate it or better still in jour town there is quite an active chapter of silver cross mothers visit them and sec if the reason is forgotten by them or their dependents or drop up to westminster hospital and see if anyone there recalls the reason for november 11th and lastly if as you intimate children do not know anything or have heard nothing of remem brance day then we suggest that you are remiss in your duty as trustee in not investigating this deplorable situation and seeing that corrective measures are taken in the schools in your jurisidiction to explain to the children and the reason why the symbol of sac rifice thpoppy is distributed to all public schools that day we have nothing but eortmpl fer lejian who 11 au apea- fcing wrap themselves in the flag and shout about the rights of vet erans to excess and we dont in tend to practice it ourselves but we do believe that if the day ever comes when commeroation is not made of those who paid the sup reme sacrifice that we might live in a democratic country and that suitable tribute is not paid to those who suffered injur in that cause then the country and the people in it will have lost some thing of incalculable alue namely the abiht lo be grateful no ember the 11th has long had a tmstical and indeed reverend memorj for its whither i gion naire- or not rectnth macleans magazine in an article on ittr ans quoted ai follows thire is i almost mmical alui to thoi hi simtvid trior particular wir and nothing better illustrates this than the turnout of ttirans un itiimmhrancc da this is to a large oftcnt true and while priv atclj we have felt as man othir veteran officials do that possiblv a better date with more clement weather could be found to observe the fallen of all conflicts in stead of a date commemorating the end of the 19141918 war et until all vets groups and various government can agree on a suit able day etc we 11 go along with the observation of remembrance day and lady for you and any of your colleagues who wish to see it abolished even in the schools we think you will stir up a real hornets nest if you attempt to disturb it we know that in this province at least it has been the official policy of those in charge that any change that is made would have to come on a recommendation from the canadian legion people are early too while we think of it we sat in on quite a discussion lately with a group in town who asked us to explain veterans preference it was quite a shock actual 1 to be asked this as we took it for gran led everyone knew the underlying reason for it actually it is quite simple and we believe quite fair it is an established piece of legislation most governing bodies be they municipal provincial or federal that in return for service during wartime that may have taken a man from his ordinary occupation during what may well have been the most productive years of his life that all thrngs being kqual the veteran be given pref erence that is the sum and sub stance of veterans preference and we believe eminently fair if the veteran applicant can do the job as well as the non veteran applic ant then in view of his service in most cases he is given the pref erence and we go on record as being most heartily in favour of this fortunately most groups re- cognbe this as an established fact and treat it accordingly in fact to our mind there have been re markably lew violations of this like the bird who s early you can get the best too now
