1mb georgetown herald wednesday june 25th 1mb editorial what is a foreigner watching a tv documentary on newfound land on a recent evening our pleasure in learn ing about canadas tenth province was some what marred by the remark of a native recently returned from toronto that he didnt like the aty because it was full of foreigners it was something which might well have been deleted from the telecast for we should hate any of our newer canadian to think that this is in any way a sample of public opinion to wards those who have chosen to leave their homeland to make their way in a new country whose language and customs must be learned for the contrary is the case and most native- bom canadians welcome the infusion of new blood new ideas and new cultures which im migration brings it is in fact one of the best things that can happen to a country to have a healthy immigra tion from other lands particularly so when canada has so much to offer in space and sc much to gain in skills to be sure such imm gration has to be controlled so that our economy absorbs the increase in the best way possible and our doors cannot be wide open to the world at all times to our own detriment the question of what is a foreigner can pose an interesting problem too for such peo ple as our newfoundland backwoodsman if used in a national sense he can include most people of his own province which became part of the dominion less than a decade ago speaking english is the criterion he must in dude a1arge section of quebec province plus second and third generation folk who still cling to their native tongue in such cosmopolitan citi les as windsor winnipeg and montreal if its surnames then perhaps our prime minister would be one of many designated as foreigners welcome to georgetown a new company incorporated to manufac ture architectural and porcelain metal products is being welcomed to georgetown leasing the old dolphin craft factory on king street several weeks ago the company is already in partial operation extensive renova ttons are being made in the building s interior ehd the outside has enhanced the scenery with a coat of blue paint with red trim p graham bell associates ltd should prove an outstanding addition to the local industrial scene the firm has personnel who know their trade and who have been working together in the industry for over thirty years their product is one which is becoming increasingly common in the building trade and which should be as sured of a steady and increasing demand good wishes on retirement mrs edna beaumont veteran member of the glen williams public school staff will say goodbye to her clasroom for the last time this week prior to retirement mrs beaumont has been honoured at several affairs largest of which was a picnic at the school on saturday to which many former students came to add their good wishes to those of present school children and their parents we can imagine that on that day particular ty she looked backward sharing the happiness of those who she had helped along the way to success in their adult life shedding a tear per the bullfight menace we share the sentiments expressed in a let ter received this week from the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals protesting a bloodless bullfight being planned in lindsay this summer we strive to educate our younger genera tion in animal welfare and the promotion of rea sonable consideration of animals the letter states are they now to be exposed to this form of degenerating spectator sport are we destined to have bloodless bullfights today and bloody ones tomorrow the spca is doing everything in its power to prevent the lindsay bullfight and urges haps for some who had fallen by the wayside and had not realized the promise they had shown as youngsters for teaching is at the same time a frustrating and rewarding experience and no ob is more important than that of a teacher who holds in her power the ability to instil qual ihes in a boy or girl which help share their fut ure destiny people of glen williams can say thanks for a ob well done to this lady who has brought honour to her chosen profession she will be missed when the
