tmi oaoroarown hiiud wednesday july lab lass itorial absolute integrity necessary recent resignations of three provincial cab inet ministers and revelation that the leader of the opposition also purchased stock in a north ern gas company which returned huge- profits to those getting in on the ground floor poses a del icate question of ethics which ts perturbing to citizens of all political creeds on a smaller scale it shakes ones faith in the calibre of a higher government as does the sherman adams scandal in the states the pros and cons have been well argued in the daily press and rt would appear that tech nically there cart be no question of crime on the part of members of parliament who thought they saw a good thing and umped to invest but mor ally there can be severe criticism pf elected of ficials malcing private profit by virtue of their position we are not so naive as to believe that a perfect state can be achieved in any govern ment or ariy business as long as it involves hu man beings with the trail ties which beset us all in fact had messrs kelly mapledorem et al invested in the stock in their own names we would be inclined to shrug it off as legitimate extras which come to them by virtue of their positions georgetowns mr besides imparting wisdom to acquisitive young minds a school teacher often leaves other things equally important which are remembered in later life particularly so when the teacher is a character a term we use in the nicest sense of the word and when a teacher is blessed with a nick name by students he joins the select company of people who aren t forgotten who years later are fondly remembered when people get chatting about their school days such a person was ralph ross whose long and useful life ended this week at the wonderful age of 94 known to generation of students as the duke mr ross though retired over 20 years and absent from town for ten remained a vital force in the minds of his former students nor did he forget the town where he spent a large portion of his teaching years for he kept in dose takes getting used to increasing appearance of shorts and halters among lady shoppers is something which takes getting used to maybe as someone told us when we mentioned it we re not young enough to ignore them or old enough to appreciate them we took one of our rare shopping trips when the family was on vacation and besides choosing our purchases we also took some side glances at our fellow shoppers purely obec tive mind you we were amazed at the variety of costumes which ladies can think up to go shopping in and we can t say any of them are improvements on a simple house dress a skirt onl blouse or a sundress what we do criticize strongly is that in most cases the stock was purchased in the name of friends or relatives and in direct contraven tion of the directive of the head of the govern ment a tantamount admission certainly that members were aware they were not acting strictly according to hoyle and what bothers us still mora is that de spite full coverage of the matter in the daily press majority public opinion does not seem to be against them at least in the ridings where by elections have since been held in earlier politi cal days in the province such a matter could hive easily toppled a government r we are enough of a pur tan ttrthink that the large majority of men who run for office in high er forms of government are like those who do so at the lower level of municipal affairs doing so because they want to contribute their talents to serving their fellowman in a position of responsi bility and trust we hope this is so and t must be so or we are surely head ng on a downward path which can only br ng tragedy to a country as it has in others where corruption graft and cynicism have ted to the enddestruction of a soc j lety blur vall1y ranch touch as a herald reader students do not i ghtly select their candi dates for posterity in our own school days in a large city school we can recall only three who were so honoured one gentleman nher ted the hook as h s nomde plume probably be cause of h s eagle eye in spotting misdemeanors almost before they began another was but tercup a mid i ttle man with a fine m nd w th noth ng derogatory meant by the students who loved him there was also pete wh ch wasn t h s first name at all and mposs ble to f gure why he was so called as for mr ross we asked a former mem ber of h s class why he became the duke because he always looked like what we expected a duke should look like was the an swer don t throw that brick lad es we know what you re going to say you accept them on the beach you cla m why not on main street and in a store well we accept pyjamas too but they are more in place m a bedroom than on the street we accept floor length evening gowns at a for mal dance but they would look somewhat ridi culous on a shopping trip so it is with shorts and halters they re fine adornments in the right surroundings and we should leave some thing for father to look forward to when he goes to the beach for his vacation birthday party at blll vallry ranch mr jos scotts family celebra ted his 70th
