that has been accorded the canadian national exhibition the great annual show is a conv parative upstart as far as on tario fairs are concerned while the small rural fair may look with some satisfaction in the realiza tion that the hi show sprang from such a local exhibition that is a feature of our towns and villages today while with a few exceptions many of them are unknown out side of their immediate area there were 246 rural fairs held in on tario last year and it is gratify ing that 70 per cent of them had an increase in exhibitors and 66 per cent had higher gate receipts than in the previous year it rould seem therefore that tbe tntario rural fair continues play an increasingly important part in the social and economic life of the province in addition to providing a show window where agricultural ma- i chincry and the latest advances j in husbandry can be demonstra- ted the ontario fall fair contin ues to play an important part in fostering a better understanding between the rural and urban resi dents of the province through exhibits and demonstrations a bet ter understanding of the problems of the farm is brought home to the urban dweller in turn some insight into the complexities of urban life is given the farmer this cannot do other than lead to a better appreciation of each oth ers problems and work to the advantage of both segments of the population it was not long after the first settlement of ontario that the country fair made its appearance settlement in ontario commenced in 1783 and in 1792 had progres sed sufficiently along the niagara river and peninsula to justify the formation of an agricultural soci ety and the holding of the first fair in ontario this pioneer society had its headquarters at niagaraont he- lake then known as newark and had as its distinguished president governor simcoe agricultural societies and the annual fairs sponsored by them gradually became organized ill over ontario as settlement in the province progressed in 1845 a provincial association was formed and in 1846 the first provincial fair was held in tor onto out of that fair the cana dian national exhibition had its birth thus out of a little society or ganized in 1792 which held a fair that saw fewer than a score fif ex hibitors and had a prize list ot only a few pounds develipvj the great exhibitions at toronto lon don and ottawa as well as the hundreds of fairs that play mich an important part in the rural life of the province get the service you pay for by having john s repair your defective tv appliances our work is tops our prices
