newspaper association and the onvio division of the cw n a editorial comment industrial picture brightens georgetown s industrial picture took a brisk upward turn last week with announcement of a large addition to alliance paper mills ltd which will considerably increase the productive capac ity of the 45yearold mill the expansion will help to alleviate a down ward drop in the industrial residential ratio in the same herald issue which contained the alti ance news figures presented to council by the assessment commissioner revealed that tndus trial assessment in the town is at present 12 compared with last years 15 5 and that the residential ratio has been increased by that per centage large scale house building presently being earned on would tend to inflate this up- downtown parking as editorials must of necessity be written the day before the herald is printed we have no indication of what might have happened at a chamber of commercemerchants mayor meet ng last night but regardless of what was dis cussed or decided only one answer is possible the meeting was called to discuss parking n the downtown business area which always crowded has become intensified more by the rapidly increasing population arid which even the introduction of parking meters has not com pletely solved at present the town has created a large parking area behind the block of stores on north east main street it is on private property and only a negligible amount of tax money has been expended with which there can be slight quar- ward trend and the alliance assessment will have a salutary effect even more important is the boost in morale which such announcements create in a commun ity it is nice certainly to know that new indus tnalists choose our town as location for a branch of their industry it is even nicer to know that firms like alliance provincial paper and smith and stone established for many years are fix tures in our industrial life and when expansion is needed it will be done right here fa th in georgetown s future expressed in such a concrete way by an established local firm can have a far teaching effect on prospec t ve locators rel a few years back when downtown george town had the only commercial section of town some consideration might have been possible to carry this parking area to its conclusion with pavement and lighting introduction of a second shopping area on the highway and impending construction of another highway plaza precludes any thought of this for both these areas supply their own parking areas at no expense whatsoev er to the public the end result downtown if a large free parking area is to serve the public can only be for merchants themselves to band together and rent or buy a property as a collective endeavour and pay for any improvements necessary to make it attractive to the parking public beaver lumber 11 wafer street tr 7 2234 balunafad minister wife attend young peoples convention mr and mrs murray mcbnde
