meeting cr em hyde who was absent from the previous monday council meeting when board representatives ask ed and were granted approval for debenturing an extra 100000 for school additions at george town acton and milton made a lengthy plea for council to inter vene on behalf of a local contrac tor mcnally construction whose tender was some 340 higher weve got to look after our own and were going to look fool ish next year if we have problems finding jobs for local people while one of the biggest buildings ever erected in town ls done bj a tor onto firm said cr hyde as he argued for further consideration on the tender award mr hde said the 340 is a paltr sum in such a large job and that there would be nothing illegal in the mcnally firm reduc ing its price by that amount some thing which he said is quite com moo in the trade it s quite a slap in the face for local industry he continued mcnally s work has been of the highest class im not criticising the school board but i do think that businessmen on the board who have been crying for years that georgetown should patronize georgetown have either made a serious mistake or if they dont feel that way they shouldn t try to promote their own business that way mr hjde said tbe contract has not et been signed and that he feels council should request the school board to reconsider its de cision one councillor rapped my knu ckles last week concerning our dealings with appointed boards said mayor armstrong explaining that council can recommend things to boards but not request them the mayor said that he had che cked with board members and had been told that the georgetown members on the five municipality board had felt the contract should be awarded to mcnally and had been prepared to present such a motion however a vote had been taken b the board chairman on the adxnsabihty of accepting the lowest tender and this had earned 95 i would think the rest of the board x ould look to georgetown for the lead said cr hxde i am led to be ilex t that a george town member moxed that the iomracco firm get the contract so xou would hardlx expect the rest of the board to oppose it i think our members should have aid wed like to keep half a million dollars of business in town cr fred harrison said he fav oura keeping as much business in own as possible but a toronto contractor would not necessaruy haxe all his dealings in the city t the park school for example the same contractor had heating plumbing and electrical work done local lx and purchased cement here he said mr harrison said he would fa xour a margin of l or 2 per cent in awarding council contracts- in this ci e the school board has the decision and if council doesn t like it the onlx action possible is o replace board members when their terms expire he said 1 feet that hax ing appo nted them we haxe the right to appeal to them said cr hxde im not criticizing the board i m point ing out that this contract has an important hearing on the towns economic life a hjde harmon motion on which cr hxde aked a recorded x ote carried unammousl asking the school board to further con sider the matter sexeral councillors commented on the motion be it pak sed reeve sargent and cr gunn said the appreciated the opinion expressed b cr hyde but that council should be careful in the amount of interference with ap pointed boards and the would hesitate to make anx stronger sug gestions there s been a tot of feeling around town about this matter and i think our motion will clear it up said cr mcgilxrax cr sxkes said that councillors get criticism whether thc are dir- ectlx inxolxed in a matter or not in three tenders awarded this vear he said it almost looks like be mean to your xontractor year i m very much in faxour of local contractorsgotnng as much work as possible but this contract has been let by men who should understand why they let h deputy reeve grays opinion
