association ontario division of the c w n a tiber of the c i ancytwc editorial comment school opening recalls history s official opening ceremonies for the new stewarttown school prompted esquesmg town ship clerk k c lindsay to look up a few statis tics which provide an interesting gl mpse at the past the old school now abandoned was first established 103 years ago in township records a by law passed on june 29th 1858 first mentioned money in dol lars instead of the pounds and shillings formerly used as currency the average annual salaries of male teachers that year was 380 and of lady teachers 190 total education cost for the year 1858 was 7960 49 there were 190 pupils at tending school though only 262 of these atten ded for a full year average cost of education per pupil was 4 00 for the year school trustees of that day would hardly v sualize what has happened a century later in their community a completely modern 5 room school with automatic heat cheerfully painted classrooms and a well paid staff has replaced the old oneroom struclure pupils from a dis tance arrive by bus rather than trudging the niiles along a busy roadway a central school board administers business details for a number of schools and deals in terms okfhousonds of dollars these days and the trend in this part of ontario is to get away from the oneroom school in favour of larger central buildings which do not burden one teacher with the task of teaching eight grades one room had advantages no one can quarrel with the fact that con solidating rural schools has advantages which far outweigh those that country students of past generations might have enjoyed but the scale is not all onesided a rural teacher of ten years ago or more who had something on the ball was a command ing force in the community it takes a heap o learning as a poet once said and we have the highest admiration for a man or woman who would take on the ob of teaching the whole public school curriculum and keep order among a group of young people sofrfleofwhom were not much younger than himself pioneer teachers like pioneer workers did things which in our modern society would ust not go like the days when men worked a 60 hour week in the mills when store clerks were on the ob two or three nights- a week and when a housewife toiled from sunup baked her own bread wash ed by hand churned butter and made the chil check the voters list notice of posting of the town and township voters lists appears in this issue of the herald the printed lists available for scrutiny at the town office on main street and the township office at stewarttown are not necessarily 100 per cent correct they are copies of the assess ment roll as of the end of september and with such rapid population changes in th s d strict and the length of time needed for assessors to prepare their rolls the lists conta n several nam es of res dents who have moved to other centres and omit some who have moved to the com mumty in the past few months a 14 day period is allowed for the munici pal clerks to add names to the pr nted lists af ter they are f rs posted final date for th s in dren s clothes one room schools are being rele gated to a historic niche perhaps the one advantage that pupils re ceived from attending such a school was devel opmg the ability early in life to think for them selves it was not by design but by necessity lessons could not be taught as carefully nor ex plained as fully in the oneroom school those who mastered their studies on their own were truly educated for isn t education mainly the development of the mind to do its own thinking bui for every pupil who so did there was the one who needed and didn t get the atten tion presentday scholars receive in their indiv idual classrooms perhaps it is that the successful men and women who graduated from country schools to positions of importance in their community did so because their ability was great enough to overcome the disadvantage of their educational system it would be a fine subject for debate wouldn t it esquesmg is nov 27th and in georgetown nov 28th any of the newer residents in town or township who want to be assured of their vote should check immediately as it is impossible once the deadline date has passed for the clerk to add a name no matter how valid the qualid cations aliens incidentally unless naturalized can adians have no vote tn a munic pal election nor do people under the age of 21 such names were el mmated from the assessment records before the voters listes were printed and if by chance such a name were included the person would technically not be allowed to vote if challenged at the polls bauinafad i institute has gift shower for cedar vale the w a met for their novem ber
