for georgetown one of georgetown s most devoted public servants was the late w g marshall at various times and sometimes all at once when the town was much smaller that it ts today he held the offices of police chief tax collector assessor waterworks superintendent public works foreman dog tax collector weed inspector and relief commissioner for a man to have served in all these cap acrties and still be beloved by the populace is a tribute to the efficiency understanding and tact which he brought to these positions as a pol iceman he was fair and ust his hours were fix ed by the ob to be done and one sometimes marvelled at how he could always be on the spot be it a robbery a fire a disturbance down we ga letters letters we get letters as perry como says and the past two weeks the herald can echo him a provocative letter in last weevs me- from a ratepayer has drawn an equally provoca tive one this week from another in both there are ideas of merit as well as po nts on wh ch one could argue we wish more would come mail bag let ters to our mind should be a clearing house of ideas readers editorials as it were town domestic trouble in a home a car smash or an injured dog he used his own good udg ment n dealing with lawbreakers and his deci sion was almost always the right one whether a man received a warning or was taken to court ret rement as a town employee did not end mr marshall s usefulness to georgetown he later represented the town as reeve receiving a popular vote which has never been equalled in the towns history and yntil his recent illness he was equally at home helping guide financial affairs as treasurer of tnox church or carving turkeys at the church suppers for which knox is noted he leaves in memory a record of service which few can boast and it is with regret that georgetown says goodbye to a good friend both the letters to which we refer express ideas in which their writers believe they are sensibly written and while being controversial avoid any element of nastmess which sometimes tends to creep in when one becomes enthused about a debatable subect readers are rem nded that the herald col umns are always open providing such letters are i in good taste and contain no slander one restnc tion we make the writers name must be s gned and used when the letter appears in the paper chemistry topic for roatry guest speaker last mondays meeting tremendous success prizes arc being given to certain school grades and it is expected that at least two hundred students will be entering this indications arc thai this yiar the minstrel show will be
