forward step for main street merch ants it is on organization which has flourished on occasion in the past but has been missing for too many years while the organization came into being during discussions on parking sites in the down town area there are many more things which it can tackle given an active interested member ship of merchants who are willing to contribute a share of their time and financial support to fur thenng their business interests as well as the larger field of community betterment in past years merchants groups have prom oted such things as weekly lucky draws street dances and similar activities merchants a few years ago were instrumental in having a liquor control stare locate here helped promote a local sad news for georgetown car licence bureau installed waste containers which eventually gave way to the more adequate ones donated by the chamber of commerce in future an organized association can do much for themselevs and the town christmas lightmq has far from reached perfection either collectively or individually sales of the dollar day type have never successfully been promoted asa group action no organized attempt has ever been made to our knowledge to encourage location here of a business which theuown does not possess a photographer comes to mind as one thing which would be an asset to the busi ness community a theatre is another with proper direction and the right support the new businessmen s organization can have a bright future and we wish it well champion country correspondent for a weekly paper philip laforo left weekly newspapera association which selected mr laforce for his colui bracebridge herald gazette word that georgetown s senior band has gone out of existence is sad news for a town which has taken such pride in its musical accom plishments a bright spot however is that the boys band is thriving and the hope that in a few years these youngsters being trained so well in music fundamentals will graduate to a new senior band which will once more carry georgetown s ban ner high at the music festivals and the cne a town is the loser when itdoes not have a band there was a day when life was less hurried and television had not taken its toll when a friday night band concert was the week s highlight and even in recent years first in the theatre and later at the park band concerts have delighted audiences which while lacking in numbers made up in enthusiasm for thenusic dispensed by the local band v music hath charms the old saying goes and whether its soothing a savage breast keep ng toes tapping at a parade or delighting those who ipve music in ail its moods a town band is something no community should be without we hope t won t be too long until a senior band is again flourishing town dear frdilor i read aim interesting letter in this weeks hi raid from it c thompson which i would like to answer if i ma r c thompson is a newcomer to our fait town or he would havi be n informtd as to how the town of georgetown has doubled its pop illation m 3 cars and who is res ponsib e and whj we have no indus try looking back to 1955 we were a fairl prosperous and a happy community then was work for most of our population right in georgetown suddenl there were rumours of fabulous prices paid for farm land in the dilrex area an avalanche of oi rich quick ideas descended on this small but happ community about this time m husband and i sold propert in toronto and de cided iii lakt a much overdue holi day to the land of our birth in i- ng and and in ltal four month later we returned the building boom was on but instead of the indus trj which wt had been led to tx peel there were rows and rows of new houses one look at our tax bill was enough to convince us that while some got rich with this pro ect we were included with the ones who would pay for it as timi wtnt on and no industry transpired of importance yie the people bckan to feel the impact of this venture our taxes were doub ud more schools were needed hiu lu schools were enough in tbc past wl now have 5 or 6 this meant more uachirs more upkeep it meant a trillions to our municipal offices more sewage more water shut down and 600 families no wdepenrient on malton will be uncmpocd with no possibilities of work here in town vh lont ago wc read in the herald that a certain inriustrj was nt crested in locating in george town but alas our water supplies could on take care of our popu lation iirhips if hr building fever had been curtailed we might have had enough water a search for more water is still in progress as per the itrald f jan 21st ouncillnr mc ilray has the right idea in his complaint f the trif ling c sum of 10 000 for just a few report much pubhcit was given about the new sighs advertising the mer its or living in georgetown the only resu i to date seems to be an additional 500 new families for which we must supply more schools sewage water etc etc and which as r c thompson points out may easily lose their all the closing of makon will mean tragedy for georgetown the boom in building will surely be topped by the exodus if that happens j4 is smalt comfort to send depu
