teeners must work too at monday s council meeting mention was made of providing outdoor skating areas for young people on sunday initial discussion was field on possibility of having a ymca in town both ideas have merit and it is particularly pleasing to see young people themselves prom oting the idea of a y sometimes grown ups are too prone to think they should provide all the direction losing sight of the fact that if a plan is to succeed a large measure of support must come from the young people who are to benefit we think of ambitious proects which have been tried in the past like a mass halloween party we oldsters who planned it forgot our own youth for a time and failed to realize that kids get a bigger thrill from their trick and treat visits tocomes than they do from any organized halloween activity we think back to the ill starred georgetown recreation commission whose fault perhaps lay in not taking young people into their confidence and in trying to pro vide too much in the way of planning if we are worried about our teenagers not having enough healthful recreation for their spare time then we must encourage them to do some planning themselves an organization like club midtown is a terrific one with a potential which can lead to wonderful things in future their friday dances have prospered and their initiative in discussing a ymca ts much to be commended tn the same way we must expect the young people themselves to lead the way in other things tennis has become almost as extinct as the latin language mainly because the kids don t dig in and put the town s only courts in proper shape outdoor skating rinks would be easily created if a group of the young people who would use hem would band together and take a hand in the flooding we must count heavily on club midtown to tell us what the recreational needs are and to take the first steps as they have done with a ymca then is time enough for older folk to be come interested and lend their weight to a pro ect nor must we lose sight of the fact that ad olescence like maturity needs spare time too there must be time for reading for enjoying the sun in summer and the snow in winter we must guard against overorganization too for t can be as much a curse as lack of recreational f ac i ties announcement the management of the louise beauty lounge wish to advise that the following experienced hairdressers have joined their permanent staff miss nancy neville and mr frank zampino we are now in a position to offer extended services to our many friends and patrons the mail bag efficient works department georgetown owes a special debt of gratitude this year to the town works staff and council s road committee for a yeoman ob of keeping the roads in passable condition working against ex treme handicaps imposed by the weatherman never was this more in evidence than last week end when a storm left deposits of thick tee the tike of which hasn t been seen for many a year road chairman walter gray works supervisor alf collins and the town staff went to work immed lately and there was a m n mum of inconven lence caused in some areas the ice was brokeh up by road scrapers and carted away to minimize future flood danger storm drams at var ous lo cations in town are be ng cleared as rapidly as possible main arteries like the downtown d s tret and queen street have had the snow and ice completely removed this is only one instance of the excellent job which has been done this winter in town while we slumber crews have worked into the small hours of the morning so commuters can get their cars out on the roads in the morning it has been a real tough winter for one day the roads have needed sanding the next snowplowing then san ding again and it has been a merry go round to try and keep up with it ratepayers should be thankful to have such effic ent town employees and sk lied d rect on in these try ng limes agrep expresses his appreciation to halton milton ontario dear mr editor the
