as seen by ian cass 46 hewson crescent and specially written for the herald government has been praised and cursed the avro company i kewise to the point where the public has been thoroughly confused emerging from the word fest seem to be two inescapable facts the government is not going to alter its decision to order the arrow and unless a project of sfimtlar magnitude is em barked upon the work force at malton will be sharply reduced from its 14 000 level what then happens to those who counted on avro for their livelihood and who must buy groceries pay fuel bills clothe their families meet tax payments on homes the government s decision to cancel its con tract for the arrow and virtual shutdown of the huge avro and orenda plants is a heavy blow for a town like georgetown over 600 men and women are resident breadwinners according to statistics compiled recently by a union commit tee with weekly purchasing power of some 51 000 that a large percentage of these peo ple are unemployed as of last friday is tragic individuahy for them and collectively for the town where they live millions of words have been flowing from reporters commentators company and union representatives since the fateful decision the the grim side the grim side of the picture is that today we have 500 to 600 resident unemployed some thing which has never happened before in out any description to absorb them in the towns town s history many of these have scant chance of regain ing a job at malton those in the higher wage brackets have not the comfort of unemployment insurance to take care of their necessities and georgetown s industrial and commercial economy is- such that there are few jobs availa f their various talents and not enough jobs of the brighter side grim as the situation might seem there are brighter sides too however for temporary relief there is unemploy ment insurance which puts a few dollars in a mans pocket though unfortunately those in the higher wage brackets are cut off from this there is the fact that georgetown sits in the midst of canada s most concentrated industrial area within commuting distance from the huge toronto and hamilton metropolitan region there is hope that malton is not completely keel a possibility j possibility of a local industry is being inves tigated by an alert group of malton men who proposed this at monday s council meeting and who were promised every possible support by the town council it is their idea that they want to live in georgetown that there rs no work for them and that the only reconciliation is to create employ ment first by deciding on a saleable product then by setting up production their initiative is to be admired certainly there are many varied talents avail work field besides their everyday needs most of these men have payments to maintain on their homes many are new canadians from britain and eur ope with no relatives fn this country to lend a hand in time of trouble lost that at least a percentage of its work force will continue in some different form of produc t on our town s economy taxwfse will suffer no large blow because taxes on subdivision homes are pa d by lending institutions which own them rather than being collectible from individuals and there is some chance that there may be tern porary easing of payments on homes by those out of work until their life gets back on an even able if these could be fused with the right pro duct idea and the necessary capital secured we might be in business coincidental ly the same type of thinking has been going on for some time in the minds of cer tain citizens according to behind thescenes stor ies and the malton s men s ideas are receiving more support than one might normally expect no one should raise their hopes too high but it is not competely out of the quest on that a new georgetown industry might rise from avros ashes fender damage only when cars collide a 1953 ford driven by frederick tennis 11 byron st and a 1953 dodge sedan hours later we would be unwilling participants in an event which has no parallel in canadian history if any of us were con cerned that morning it was con cern over such things as whether the car would start after the bitterly cold night before or whether the service man would come to repair the oil furnace none of us considered the possi bility of being unemployed with in a few hours the morning was almost un eventful machinery hummed typewriters clattered phone bells rang and in the distance faintly we could hear the deep rumble of jet engines on test at 1030 a m the weekly paid staff lined up for pay as the uniformed brinks men appeared pushing the familiar trolley of pay en velopes one wag was heard to remark well we get one more week s pay anyhow this com ment did not mean that he was aware of the poised sword of democles or sword of diefen- baker but merely represented the uneasiness of malton workers during the past five months the first indication that some thing unusual was afoot came shortly before noon when a mem btr of the customs and traffic department reported a radio an nouncement saying that the arrow program had been terminated by the government the first reac tion to this news was one of dis belief most of us were inclined to think that this was just another unsupported radio station head line an understandable view considering the many unfounded reports of last august when heard that an order for a hundred aircraft had been placed despite this one could sense a vague feeling of uneasiness in the air and the usually cheerful atmos phere of payday seemed a little forced we in the office were unaware that while we rejected the rumour it was being confirm ed by a top company official in an announcement over the plant wide public address system in the ornery manner of pa systems generally it showed its weakness when most needed and the loud speakers covering our area were dead over in the flighttest area close to the runway arrow aircraft no 204 was undergoing engine run up checks prior to further test hying splitting the crisp winter air with the roar of its engines three hundred miles away in ottawa the conservative govern ment was writing off one of the largest industries in canada the run up checks on no 204 were just a waste of fuel in orenda the announcement over the pa system had stated tersely that the company had just been informed that the arrow program had been termin ated and a further announcement would be midc as soon as sible in the plant and in he offices there wat a feeling ad most of anticlimax this had threatened for so long for nearly two years security of employment had been a humourless joke with tis and now the axe had fallen strangely enough many people were still obstinately optimistic the tapcrincoff process will take several months thev said the company has other irons in the fire if the government has cancelled the arrow there must be other defence requirements which avro can produce and so just before lunch rumoorbta radio broadcast forecasting the immediate dissolution of avro aircraft and- orenda was travell ing through the plant nobody be lieved it and so we went lunch uneasy worried but not without hope after lunch even though further announcement had been made by the company rumours were dying thick and heavy and the atmosphere of pessimism was strong those who had gone to malton for lunch had heard gloomy forecasts on the radio al ready representatives of the press were coming into malton for on telephone for appointment open evenings reaction to the news of the arrow cancellation this was stuff and bigger headlines were yet to come in the office a car toon was being pasocd around surreptitiously depicting dtefen- baker pointing to the stars and stripes with a fiftieth star in has hand someone had an apple and orange in his desk marked for sale cheap 5c the general atmosphere at this time was difficult to define we all knew the arrow was finished but reaction wthiiem hatrnot really arrived most avro work ers had unbounding faith m the deltawmged interceptor which they had built to us at avro the arrow was competitive with any longrange inte and superior to most it was difiimlt to fully appreciate that it was now as dead as yesterdays news in the meantime work went on after a fashion most of m were too tense and apprehensive to concentrate the jokes and wise cracks about the future were only to avoid the display of any uon just after three oclock i notic ed a group of around one of the staff who had a phone to bis ear he to me excitedly the re making an announce ment in the other plant he said and i can hear it on this we looked at him blankly as he slammed down the re his face was bushed lie seemed hardly able to speak were all laid off all laid off be said we stared at comprehension everyone standing up and mimj around you are wanted on the someone shouted to me all personnel are to to the shop area to hear an nouncement a voice
