fact that the winter is beginning to wear on our tor tured nerves this week we are afraid we are going to write what alf sykes used to refer to as one of our unhappier columns pos- sibly he didnt use the term un happy but a utile saltier phrase the subject matter is the pres ent kid hockey as administered and paid for by branch 120 we hasten to add that the views are strictly personal that we are not making a personal attack on any individuals but merely stat ing a few facts as we have observed them over the years possibly if we dealt with the in ception of kids organized hockey j drewbrook only about 70 had registered once the program started to roll and sweater were purchased the pro gram began to pick up steam with we hasten to add very little sup port except the aforementioned iroup and a few extra hardy souls it was nohing unusual to see jne man coaching several teams another refereenig for the entire morning ajjd more often than not he others doubling as time keep iis managers etc with shift work he rule seldom were there more than four or five people to do everything at one mornings scr tes of games we have purposely repeated this old history as it s sure to be la in lied because we are fed up with hearing slighting remarks of he nun who started and babied the whole project when it was in its mfanrv ips verv well for a man to say uh tlotfsn t o ind so and so toini out to help i f cles in the way of a group of pub lic spirited citizens trying to oper ate a grossly inadequate and aij- chaic building to see that everyone gets a certain amount of use of the place certainly it would be just dandy if we could have all the ice time that was wanted but not too feasible because there are other people in the community in need of the arena too arena board members have been remark ably fair in giving oul ice time and indeed we think the chairman bud hill agrees as far as hockev is concerned but there again we suspect the stones ou hear of ice time being refused stem from some unauthorized party or part tes demanding time of the board members or arena caretaker and when they are quite rightly re fused making a production out of it if anj tvpe of arrangements were left to the chairman or sec retary there would be few if an difficulties in this respect we should sa right hire that bud and frank have tnid to do a real job and sometimes under prettv provokin was if the legion is not oml lo sponsor it properl let omeone elto do it properly in this case seems to mean supplying unliminstt funds to anyrharacter who comes along and wants to organize a hockey team or arrange out of town games the farther away the better naturally the i legion has always had a policy after the first ears abortive en try into junior hockey to pick up the labs for the saturday kid ho ckey the banquets the trophies sweaters and no other typs of ttryanhwd hocksy and weve got a hunch that the great good sense of the majority of our members will prevail and this will continue for ones information last years hockey expenditures ran to the amount of 756 all accounted for in the auditors report and an amount of money well spent but by the same token a fairly consid erable amount we might add we would suggest to any that before you decide that the legion is not spending the required amount of money just check on how much it would cost to equip several teams with sweaters thirdly the occasional outburst about the arena board not giving enough ice time all the legion has cvee wanted was their satur day morning ice time plus any iorsei ine reuiai spare ice time that the board fell ting this thursday night in would not interfere with their bu 1 auditorium henuse the list was lost on two occasions standings etc have appeared and on four oc casions the naes of those scor mg the goals in summary of lasl week s games and wc might stress it might very well be an excellent outlet tor energ il those com plaining about the lack of reports took the time to compile the lists after each game it might also prove that there is more to compil ing such statistics than appears on the surface as we said at the start ot this article we trust that it will be ta ken in the spirit it is given and that it may change the picture to at least a few kid hockey has been and will continue to be a wonderful thing for georgetown the men who each day get down to coach manage tlmekeep and help- in general are doing a great job i there will always be a few who think its all wrong thats as it should be but lets not let the ir responsible bickeringof a few up set the whole program and by way of an ending most certainly there will be those who dont agree with the foregoing and witt no doubt be anxious to say so and well be happy to lis ten although we prefer not to have
