1m1 oiokorrawn hulald wi april ishv its high tales published by the students of georgetown high school vol 7 no 9 wednesday april 15th 1959 georgetown onl editorial i ghs above average in graduation results virginia vmktr more students drop out of ghs thin out of any other school ewer students in ghs receive senior matriculation than in oth- er provincial high schools the teaching staff at jghs is made up of teachers who cant teach tm glad i dont go to ghs the lea thers always picked on me and werent fair surprising as it may seem these statements are maxle about our wretched nigh school are you one of these bad ly misinformed people in a recent english period mr lambert indicated the following the provincial average of drop outs in secondary schools last year was 31 1 per cent the geor getown drop out average was m1y 141 per cant the provincial av erage of students receiving senior matriculation last year was 12 6 per cent while the georgetown av rege wet 13 per cent compare these figures with the first two statements above and ou will see bow false they are the staff at ghs is made up of so you think youll quit school tom forsraw i wonder how many young peo ple have decided to quit school af ler the current school year is fin ished perhaps you re one of the many who are lured by the idea ot having a hit of money to spend and no homework to do every night to keep you from joining those who call themselves your friends at ttiff pool halls well take it from me stay in school in a recent editorial the editor of high talcs pointed out the al arming fact that only about three out of every 110 people entering rode mne graduate from umve it this means that out of this jears grade nine only five or six will graduate from tht universil of thfir choice hat will the rest jf them be doing that is a good question and man would like to know the answer it s well worth your consideration last ear there were six honour graduates out of about eighty people who started in grade mne n 1953 however only three of ihem are at university bill coh n douglas wrigglesworth ic master bill farmer waterloo 2 browner fully qualified teachers all the master uiu rmiuu teachers have received either their i are at teachers college jud mc ba or bsc any have specialist umber marilyn souther toronto innn tntlo is back at degrees and some have degrees in teaching thus the staff is qual afied and the large percentage of students receiving junior and se nior matriculation indicates that the teachers manage to pound knowledge into many to say that a teacher is unfair and picks on you is as farfetch d as saying your parents hate you and beat you every day are the teachers as unfair to you as you make them out to be i think not you should become a teacher yourself and tr to teach a bunch of cut ups and untamed rascals who have no desire to learn and only continue going to school to hold the seat down do ou expect a teacher to let them live a life of leisure at the back of a c ass while others are actuallj working this type of back seat driver us ually fails to exercise the best manners and this is too much for any teacher to withstand could you stand all the heckling our teachers are forced to endure all day long from a bunch of socal led students who don t give a hoot about you or education statements against ghs are real ly laughable and irrelevent con sider the population of george town and then compare the size of the high school with hts number and you will see that ghs meets the demand the cramped condi tion will however be remedied by the new additions now under way during the past two months the patience of the ghs teacher harj beotaxed even still further be- 1 cause of the classroom conditions several classes had to be let off school because of no room and it was necessary for classes to rem ain in one room all da an inev liable result with all the construc tion going on so before ou go making am more hast remarks i suggest ou think over what 1 have a read in dicated to the person who knows what a good high school we have our statement would make ou appear ignorant of a few sim pie facts support vour school and you will help it in its fight to con quer its basic problems think and learn more about the situa tion before you criticize waterloo college by carol conle the first in a series of interviews with students attending our various universities the high cost of attending a uni versity today keeps many students from pursuing their educatoin futtj ther than senior matriculation in high school in the united states there are se- and one ours trulj is back at ghs trying to improve his marks where are the other eighty or tunet people some were working malum some are working in town and some in the citj but most or these people are making a much money as will ever be able to make the because the do not have enough education to advance gran ted there hae to be some labour ers but do thej hae to be you you hae the opportuniu to sla at school and to get a higher edu ation at uniersit h not take adantage of if in this modern w orld we get eer thing in packages from hou ses to boats to puddings thi- is often the vtaj with our uhole lift we just go and get a package of cake mix it to bake it instead of mixing it oursehes and so of en also wejust look to see what someone else has done instead of making decisions for ourselves don t be afraid to be different from the gang they 11 respect you for your decision to stay at ichool in an case think the si tuation over very carefully before jou decide to drop out i m sure that joull make the right decis ghs has little sister in korea by june lyon as most of you know iscf with the help of our student council has adopted a utile korean orphan worked so ver hard to make the dance such a won derful success it seems that one fourth form girl was still working in school clothes when the dancers i aue li ti began to arrive thev re it seems that many of the lower school classes are having ta least one da off each week because of he construction work going on at he school because of this ou itoual hear moans and groans from upper school but wo in c special shouldn t complain after all we finish our school before the others chatter in the halls nip n tucu tom do we have anj thing learn for today some students are afraid thai the bncklaers hucklibcm hound seems to be the latent interest of numbers of hutch s academv of rine arts don t forget old huck joiught fellows ron dear we knew toronut would win gee you are a browner or just plain browner how often have you heard these expressions at the school in the student s voc abulary it is used mainly in ex pressing one s opinion of a fellow student who has achieved a good mark in an exam test or essay the following arc the results of discussions with students them elves marilyn barth is it really very fair the classmate who has been rated that highly by a teacher is very proud of his mark and has worked hard to deserve it and then when a friend turns around and says browner in his face it dulls his satisfaction even though the person who says it may be slightly envious of the others mark after all what are we at school for to have a good time doing nothing surely that len t the only way to be really popular with the current crowd so is it such a crime to want to study and get good marks think about it lesle brown 9e my opinion of being called a browner is that it is just a nickname maybe it is also a bit of jealousy because browners are a bit smarter and do well in school audrey brown are you called a brownerr if so this lb my opin ion if the person who called ou this is our friend it is likely just a joke if you let high marks in a subject the could just be jeal ous because their mark was much lower than ours brenda dawson i0b to be cal led a browner according to one person in our class meant ou participated in school activities more perhaps than your friends i disagree because you are elec ted to the student council by our class because they feci ou are the one for it dawn fiebig i asked some of the others in our room to give me their opinion here are the re sults i think the word should be banned sometimes those who are called browners get into trouble trying to keep from being called this name i don t like it i think it shows jealousy on the part of the user yes i think it should be banned because it shows ignor ance and rudeness to the out sider it makes the school sound cheap those who use it think the are bbuij smart but if thc reall know how terrible it ounds the would soon stop i ilh the aboe as far as i can ste it has somo underlying mi aiung that no oni seems to want to disclose 1 suggest that we just i forget the existence of this word and go on without it lois mven iia the origin of this word is a mstcr to me in the 2nd world war the allies cal ed the germans browners bee ause of the heav woo brown this however has no connection with the pros ent da browner the dcfini tion of todaj s browner is a bright tudent who alwajs has his home work done answers questions i quickly and accurate in class asks questions of the uachers an swering and ne er fooling talk ing chewing gum or laughing in the wrong places in claws in oth er words he is a perfecrstudent according to many overheard and personal surcs approxim ate fift percent of the students in each class arc tagged browners at 1 ast once a week therefore if this is the case we should be bursting with pride about our school if fift per cent of the pupils are perfect student personally i do not believe half of the students ire thorough perfect so soim whi re iiool the line pupils are bein knighted browner whin the do not deserv the browner class is very ex elusive and membership is diffi cult to attain the passwords arc brains and hard work and without these you can never be come a full fledged honcst-to- goodncss all canadian browner grade xii report marilyn berth easter has come and gone and it seems that the final cxamina tions arc upon us it makes you wonder who will be in the same class next year with us and what they plan to do after they
