highlight the visit of governor general massey last thursday was a highlight which will long be re membered in town arrangements made by council were excel lent and the short half hour of his visit was so well planned that there were no obvious signs of haste and a maximumamount of ceremony was accomplished during his stay from the moment his excellency alighted from his train he was a hit with the populace the motorcade down queen st was colourful and the cheering throngs of children on st geor ges church lawn many waving little flag7and the bunting decorated platform made a gay scene mr massey spoke longer than had been expected and cleverly held his audience in the palm of his hand as he pretended that the old idea of a school hoi day was outdated and that he understood children liked school so welt now a reminder next year councils dea of honouring the governor generals visit with a scholarship next year was a fine idea and one which we are sure met with favour from the recipient the governor general is well known for his interest in education and the arts and as he said when receiving it nothing made him happier than to know that his visit would be remembered next year at the high school commencement when the scholarship was presented council s idea could well be expanded upon by individuals and organizations many school adays that he was considering asking teachers to have an extra day s classes on saturday in honour of his visit his showmanship was worthy of bro ther raymond and the groans cheers groans en ded in a climax of cheering when the expected an nouncement finally came it made one feel proud too to have a mayor as fluent as jack armstrong as he read h s address of welcome whose gractousness and poise on the platform matched that of the distinguished v sitor the solemnity which followed at the cen otaph was equally impressive as the governor general greeted war veterans and militia and laid a wreath in memory of the dead and the final drive down main street lined with spectators and up queen street again where school children cheered our visitor on his way was in keep ng with the sp ntof the day pr zes are already available recently a depressingly familiar story appeared in the tor onto newspapers it described the arrest of two drunken hood lums in the downtown queen street district of toronto this in itselr is depressing enough the fact that the arrest was observed by a sullen and antagonistic crowd of bystanders is far more de pressing many readers will recall a similar situation two or three years ago in the same district when the officer making the arrest was attacked by several other hoodlums from the crowd of onlookers and severely beaten up no one came to the police man s assistance apparently the event was part of the evening s entertainment this is an extreme example of the unhappy and unhalthy relationship existing between our lawenforcement of ficers and a large proportion of the public a d sturbingly large proportion it is evident that many canadians look on the police as enemies and many more as a necessary evil jj j uni 5 the first step in this direction next time you are stopped for speeding tell the truth the one single factor which en ables modern society to maintain the basic rights of many and the protection of the weak from the strong is the law of the land un leas the law is in forced it is mere ly a worthless piece of paper ir the law is not enforced we will return to barbarism and anarchy squarely behind tnc law stands our public servant ihi man whose salary you pa the man selected b our elec cd council tht policeman he is there for jour protection for the protection of our wife and fami ly for the protection or your prop erty he is one of he most esen tial members of our society this being so whj is there such a con flict between the public and tht police some of the reasons art not hard to find the attitude of man policemen to the public is not apt to encour age admiration or friendship tht are rude boorish disbelieving and arrogant ionie een tivc the im pression that without the uniform they might taailj be on the other s de of the law however if we spent most of our working hour rung to cope with smalltime crooks drunks wife beaters and the rest of mcut s scum we might find that some of the finer points of social decorum had worn a bit thin another reason may be found in occasional cases of police dishon ety which alwas make headline news or in the instances of con fhet between cue authorities and police chiefs which occurs from time to time this alwajs provides an opportumtv for some self ap pointed experts to say see that in the papers them police is all a same thus applying the russian brand of justice guilt by asoc lation another factor which js not li able to improve police morale is the ineptitude and incompetence of some of our legislators and mag istrates this has been the subject of many articles and editorials m the canadian press and will not be developed here in passing how clt consider the 67 cases of care- lest driving dismissed b magis trate r c jackson in peterborough who said you can change he rules half waj through the game t wonder what the policeman thought particularly those who might have risked their necks to summon the culprits so much for the attitude of the police which i feel will alwajs reflect the atti tudc of the people when was the last time a friend of ours received a ticket for spec ding or illegal parking did he lh nk it was justified it almost certainlj was justified but it i- surprising how a respected mem ber of socictj can abrogate his principle- vhtn he ha commit ed a minor offense of this sort pw n dcrho man e wc fficials havt manned to eade minor charge which thejtpwj deserted nd what doethis lb for police integ ntj in this matter of ihe public and the police we have reached a wc lous circle the attitude and there by the efficient of the police hill not improve until the attitude of the public improves and vice versa in my view a change in heart b the public must be the first step let us all lake time to consider that a policeman s lot is not a happv one he has a tough difficult and often dangerous job to do a job that it unpopular and underpaid let us try not to look on him as thurs fr1 sat white wilderness pius kettles in the ozarks mon tues may 25 26
