the georgetown herald wl june 3rd 1s claims assessors ideas oh teaching outdated editor i georgetown herald georgetown ont dear mr editor it was my good fortune to have a copy of your paper of may 13th given to me i have never been in george town nor do i know any of your citizens even in view of this fact i enjoyed reading the news of your community i was a bit amused by the utter ances attributed to- your assess ment commissioner mr joseph gibbons in connection with sepa rate school assessment in his letter to the editor it has been my understanding that the right to establish separate schools in the province of ontario wis granted and is incorporated in the act of confederation i do not recall where the local assess ment commissioner had to give his permission of course there might be a different law in george town i have been associated with assessors and assessment depart ments for nearly forty ears and as public servants paid by all the tax pajers i thought their func tion was to assess the property under their jurisdiction according to the assessment act apparentl in georgetown the assessment commissioner is also called upon to write letters to the paper crit tang some of the tax paers t lat help to pa hia salar i would also imagine this un signed letter referred to would be a church bulktin mr gibbons if he is a church going catholic would be aware of this fact thty arc never signed to my knowledge they usually contain church an nouncemenls for the benefit of people with poor memories as for the separate school board appointing a chairman on assessments this is not unusual large boards have permanent men on this kind of work i spend many days each year working wth our local assessors checking school assessments it saves a lot of time for the court of revision i know it will be quite an ad ditional task for mr gibbons to use the extra column provided in his assessment ledger for separate school rates butl imagine he will manage alright thousands of other assessors throughout the province have gotten over this problem for j ears most positions do have little inconveniences about tht m the comments made in connec uon with the benefits of teaching religion as outlined in this un signed letter would seem a bit out lated if mr gibbons follows tht news i am sure he will find it la controversial corner by ian cass no fireworks in this ejection with the forthcoming provincial election only a few days away it is a pity that so litte has been offered to the voters by either of the two maior parties in view of the many years of conservative government we have had in this province and be cause of a possible reaction against the party due to some federal conservative policies one would have thought that john winter- meyer and his party would have made a strong determined effort to show the voters that the liberals could succeed where the conservatives have failed this has not been the case june the eleventh approaches and we have done during the past ten years put us in ag ain and we 11 give you some more of the same the wintermcyer liberals after a few thrusts at tri vial issues such as beer in grocery stores some watereddown support for health insurance and a bit of red herring raking says the conservatives have been in power too long it s time for a change the urgent matters of importance do not appear to be
