of the credit valley ministerial association for the year always takes the town of a luncheon and this anticipated social event occurred on wednes day june 10th at the jack o lantern restaurant in george town the dinner convened at 12 30 with the president rev g l royal the vice president rev lloyd whan and the secretary treasurer rev 1 n freel m charge the highlight of the meeting was an address delivered by mr murray cotterill public relations officer ior the united steel workers of america and a mem bcr of the religion and labour foundation mr cotterill s pres ence at the luncheon had grown out of a concern on the part of the ministerial in regard to the attitude of the protestant church to organized labour ifc had been felt over the years that the rela heirship between the two was of a very flimsy and sometime anta gonistic nature out of this con ccrn grew a strong desire to meel with and speak to a christian man who war deeply involved in thi trade union movement mr murray cotterill was such a man for his background was one of energetic christianity having been reared in the methodist church and eventually assuming a posi tion on one of the committees of the united church of canada labour relations and at one time being superintendent of the sun day school at kunbourne park united church toronto mr cotterill outlined the history of the union movement stressing its roots in great britain dunng the industrial revolution of the 18th century the speaker differ entiated between the british type of union and those found on the continent especially in france and germany mr cotterill said the british unions were organized as protective societies and reccivea a great deal of their impetus from the methodist revival which swept england in the dajs of john and charles wesley thus the british tjpe union which has its counter part in ganada is the only union movement that was really moti vated from a religious root tlu protestant churches and their leaders were largel made up o land owners factory owners gtntrj men of means and this had in the course of years if j to a rather down glancing a- far as labour unions were con cerned mr cotterill deplored thi situation and hoped that the prot estant churches would more actively try to understand the movemenf and make their voices heard in labour councils mr cotterill was introduced by mr douglas brown and was thanked by rev eric v warren after the formal address a lengthy question period was enjoyed with the mm istcrs throwing all manner of queries at their guest and receiv mg solid and assured answers in return the banquet was convened and arranged by the vice president rev r l whan first baptist church georgetown other mm isters in attendance were rev b a nevin boston and omagh
