the georgetown herald sixifmfaots icianmail rod offica dp ottawa georgetown ontamo wednesday june 24th 1959 rrst section what council did plan rexway dr surfacing defer decision delrex blv a brisk debate on two main roads in delrex preceded a coun cil decision monday to apply thj prune and chip treatment to rexway trive while deferring decision on delrex blvd both roads are plagued with poor drain age according to opinions expres sed by councillors and will never be in good shape juntil storm sewers estimated to cost 150000 are installed the debate started when road chairman walter gray announced that the engineering department anticipated grading the two streets this week and using a dust laying material were going to have to tnstal storm sewers before we do any thing permanent to these roads said gt fred harrison other wise farre just throwing money away mr harrison estimates it will cost some 150 000 and said coun 1 cil should have looked into the roads more carefully before ac cepting them from the subdivider we might as well tell the peo ple whats happening and why the roads arent being fixed he con turned i certainly won t vote for anj major road expenditure know ing this 1 m no engineer but when i see these streets after a storm and water running o or catch basins it s obvious what is need ed w e can t spend 150 000 from current revenue and i doubt we could borrow the monev even if council wants to said the maor so grading and dust laving seems the onlj answer dcput reeve gra explained th prime and chip for the streets is in the ears road program but when it was found storm sewers were needed the road committee decided against hard surfacing this ear lt wasal this point that cr garfield mcgilvra made a strong plea jfor surfacing- rexway i it s a busy thoroughfare and should be treated at least as well as the subdivision side streets he said were just fooling around if we grade and la dust questioned engineer geoffrev bligh estimated cost of pr me and chip as about the same as dust laing though the latter would have a stabilizing effect on the road base he said at this point in the meeting cr mcgilvra was supported b cr annc currie in moving for the rexwav improvements drawing a length speech from cr ern hjde who claimed thai a satisfactory road could be created b putting on asphalt prime with a sand coat ing spread bv the tow n works staff this would cost s800 com pared with 3 000 for the other he said cr hjde said it is ridiculous to spend monev when it is known the job will not last the road chairman had said onh 15 minutes before that rexw a was in no condition to prime and chip he pointed out a dust laving job wont stand up either interjected the deputy reeve asphalt and sand isn t worth a hoot on a busy street was cr mcgilvrays opinion which drew comment from cr hyde that rate payers had been satisfied with this for years theyre paying high taxes on rexway and deserve something fit to drive on whether h last or not said cr mcgilvray theyre paying high taxes everywhere in town and tax money shouldn t be wasted was cr hyde s answer i m glad cr mcgilvray made this motion said mr gray for 1 m tired of hearing complaints about dust and poor roads indicating that he would sup port the motion cr harrison said he favoured the 3 000 expendi ture and that the sanding method is inconvenient as tar is carried into hbuses until it settles you call it tar now said cr hyde but that is what asphalt prime is sanding worked as well as those lovely little chips which cost so much money we ve progressed a lot since those days said cr mcgilvray we certainly have look at our road budget was cr hv de s answer cr john elliott said he couldn t vote for the motion unless it in eluded delrex blvd reeve doug sargent said he hesitated to vote when it was not a road committee recommenda lion and when so manj questions seemed to be unanswered when the vote was taken the reevo and crs elliott and ude were in opposition a mcgilvra elliott motion for similar action on delrex blvd was vetoed when cr elliott asked for a recorded vote on to find the other seven council members op poaed majority opinion was that an opinion on water damage and on the best action to take should be secured before the boulevard is dealt with fete english relatives returning to england an ixorenda empovee and his aife
