credit indian history is conservation report item ttiese summer days one freq uently sees indians working on the market gardens throughout the cre dit valley watershed many of them are migratory workers who winter on georgian bay reserva tlons a great many are descend ants of indians who once lived in this area the year around an interesting account of the first indians to ocupy the credit watershed is given toy v b blake who contributed the historical sec tion of the credit valley conserv ation report this comprehensive background book was compiled by a reseanm staff assigned by the department of planning and dev elopmcnl immediately prior to the formation of the credit valley conservation authority about three years ago mr blake writes that the earl est inhabitants of the watershed belonged to those prehistoric races called the preroquolan which left evidence of their presence in many ndely separated parts of ontario it does not appear they occupied the credit area at all extensively he states at any rale they have left few traces behind them it is unlikely they neglected to use the region for bunting and fish tog for the salmon and deer must have been as atractive to them as they were to later tribes who used the area small sites and surface finds of preiroquoian origin nave been found in the southern part of peel county but at present these do not constitute evidence of any large scale occupation it would seem natural mr blake pointed out that the flats 6f the credit and its salmon fisheries should hae led the peoples of the iroquoian language group to occu py the area in the 16th century and it is quite possible they did but when champlain reached the land of the hurons in 1615 and began to cohect infontaauon about the great lakes regionsee seems to have heard of no tribes occupy ng the north shore of lake on tario east of thecountry of the neutrals and directly south of ttre hurons and petuns champlain knew of a river in the north west and flowing southeast into lake st louis ontario between the humber and the west end of thelake he shows such a stream on his map of 1632 but on this map he places no villages on the north shore near lake st louis this may have been due to iro quois pressure and there have been various speculations as to the tribes living in the area be fore arrival of the french on the strength of a tradition of the petun or tobacco nations it has been supposed that this people lo- sugar and spice miiih hj bill smxlbt el the wtettea bete po peter darlington flight cadet p ft s darlington son of mr and mrs t e ing around in my mind for a long time was crystallized when i read of the overwhelming reception the people of chicago had given the queen during her visit here i think ips time we shook off our selfishness did the fair thing and offered to lit tht united states become part of canada its downright hoggish for a measly 17 million canadians to be sitting here in this big fat wealthy coun try while iso million neighbors are crowded into a much smaller area that is practically depleted of natural its like a miser with a million in the bank sitting all alone in his great big house too cheap to spend the fuel o warm it while ftts happy golucky cousin who has is inherit lives trailer with ten kids- and has work like a demon just to keep them all fed and warm and cloth ed aside from the selfishness angle it would make sense if we took in the states canada would be the biggest country in the world fol low that up with 20 years of wide- open immigration and weld ha half of europe over here then we could look those chinese and russians right in the eye and say slow down buster or you ii get a fat lip there s never been any real an imobily between the two nations so there d be no inch since they tried to conquer the country back in 1812 but made a botch of it anyway most of our ancestors ware hoeing spud in iraland stealing cattle in scotland or pull ingr the forelock to the squire in england whan that was going on sine than aside from the fanian raids a typical irish fare tht only attampt at invasion has been not with guns but with dollars and we welcomad them with open arms ome of our people are descen ded from united empire loyalists and theyd probably want some compensation but that could be handled wed merely give them back the tend their fo or were run out of and alt would be forgiven of course most of that land is in and around new york city and runs they tell me as high as two or three hundred dollars an acre as recompense to the dispossessed of wall st and madison avenue we d give them ten square miles of tundra for each acre of n y real estate that s fair nougb surely politically there d be no prob lem instead of having ten provin ces we d have 59 or 60 it would be a dire blow to texan to learn that they were numbered among the middlesized provinces but think whet fun it would be at a provincial federel tax conference with 59 provinces demanding just ice from honest john or whoever was prime minister of course f they were alowed in the americans would have to change their habits no more wal king into a drugstore and saying cimme a fifth of bourbon they would have to 1 ne up like good canadians consult the hieroglj phics present their permits and buy it from the government with proper humility and gratitude for the privilege no more of those easy divorces theyd have to learn that in can ada it doesn t matter if your hus band is a drunk a wifebeater in sane or has deserted you you still cant get rid of him unless he s an adulterer and you can prove it mind jou i dint think should just open the bor ler and let them come trampling in here to wallow in our wealth and i turc that would spoil them rirbt off the bat and besides the wouldn t appreciate it if thej k t it for nothing no i d charge them a nominal sum ja s100 a hod that would retire canada s yiat nal debt of course we d have to take on the us national debt but wed immediatelv repudiate it and start off with a clean slate it might be a little hard on the u s farmers who ere making much money in subsidies for not growing stuff that theyve retired but we could relocate them in the muskeg and put them to killing mosquitoes of course there d be the ques tion of where to put the m 11 ions who flocked north when they saw he gates opened personally 1 d hay it in the agreement that the fust 50 million of them would be settled north of a line fcom hud son baj due west to the rockies that would jtcep out the carpet baggers and open up the north and wed feel a lot safer with 50 milhon yanks between us and the russkies i can realty see no hitch in the plan we use the same currency we both speak english though theyd have to become bilingual like us and able to toss off esides in french like papa est encore dans la malson du chlen and just think there would be free trade and those things dear est to our hearts our cars our liquor and our smokes would be a lot cheaper 51 guelph street georgetown triangle 72461 georgetown minor lacrosse thursday july 23rd and tuoaday july 28th 8 10 years 630730 12 years 730830 10 glen taxi operated by jim boll 2-
