lowville and from there past the new falrview school and kings quarry to cedar springs this lovely summer re sort wilh its pretty cottages rec reation grounds and beautiful tow ers end trees proved to supper of sandwiches ice cream cake tea and coffee was served and heartily lois ihglls played several stirring selections on her accordion a speech of thanks expressing the appreciation of the residents to mrs goiter the gracious hostess mrs a cairns the worthy mat ron and mrs j purdy the conve ner as well as all the representat ives of the lodge was given my muriel thompson the hearty round of applause given by the re sidents proved their gratitude to all those who were in any way re sponsible for having given the re sidents such a wonderful afternoon a gracious reply was given by mrs cairns before leaving for home each resident received the gift of an orange as a memento of the afternoon on this occasion it was a great pleasure for the residents to have with them at her first so cial event in connection with the residents mrs earl mongraw of milton who has recently joined the staff of the manor muriel thompson although the day proved cloudy with occasional showers of rain the people of norval and union presbyterian churches assembled in stanley park erin on july 20 lfor their annual congregational and sunday school picnic there were 95 adults and children from the two rural churches gathered under the dining plaza for a typi cal country picnic of salads galore sandwiches of every description chocolate milk courtesy of the georgetown dairy fresh raspberry tarts and james mcdonald being pro- over the older girls david ander son was victor in the senior boys race after fighting his way down the field with some others nagging his heels flbally the three- legged race was run with twelve teams but diane mckane had taught wlhja mcllveen her lessons well and they appeared amidst the fog and cheers as champions fit fo the hall of fame aifter the races a been selected to represent halton 4h glob members at pro vincial 4club leadership week this programme is sponsored by the ontario department of agri- culture and is being held the week of july 27th at the on- tario agricultural college the programme started this year is open to one outstanding 4h club member from each county and dis trict in ontario and will include training in technical agriculture as well as physical education con siderable use will be made ol the newly constructed physical educa tion building and the course will include in the leadership training week farm and water safety ani mal science soils crop production and agricultural engineering jacks selection is based on his over all participation in local 4h club programmes and standing in provincial interclub one of the travelling scho larships awarded to junior farmer members in halton county there will be approximately 70 dele gates taking part in the program representing most of the counties in central and western ontario on the tour delegates will view farming industrial and recreation- 1 al centres in eastern ontario montreal que and counties in quebec evelyns selection is a result of her participation in 4h home- making clubs and junior farmer programmes the tour will be held during the week of august 23rd choose representatives for summer camp j a f marie marshall rjt 1 milton and sandy buchanan rr 1 mof fat will represent the halton juni or farmers association this year at the 1959 provincial leadership training camp this programme for junior far mers is sponsored by the ontario department of agriculture with the cooperation of the junior farmers association of ontario the setting for the weeks activi ty will be geneva park lake cou- chiching during the week of sep tember 7th this has been an annual event and the programme has been in strumental in training many out standing junior farmer members over the past years claimed the winner following this rousing opening another race was called with the threeyear olds tak- 1 ing part and the laurel crown fell to a lass from union susan les lie in order came the kindergar ten girls followed by the kinder garten boys and the champions ar ising from these two events were mary mcgee and david dolson the primary girls then gave vent to their enthusiasm in a duel which found lorene archdekin successful and in the primary boys after a close fought struggle john royal emerged the victor a break then occurred in the strenuous schedule as the ladies were asked to line up for the shoe kicking contest and as the men scrambled for cover under a show er of feminine footwear mrs an drew mcchire was declared win ner and champion after the dust had settled then appeared the junior boys on the scene to show their prowess to the assembled picnickers and billie cook arose champion on the field then not to be outdone the junior girls lin ed for their event and margaret mcclure was c champion a wheebanow race ras then call ed and although the participants were many david anderson- and bill cook were declared an unbeat able combination the intermed iate gtrls fought the struggle right down to the line but the judges were in agreement that diane mckane was winner amongst the intermediate boys douglas mc donald accepted his laurels after finishing ahead of some fine young runners the sack race proved fun with many girls and boys tak ing part but apparently diane mc kane had been practicing on her fathers farm and was an easy winner even over some fastmov ing boys to add to a perfect day diane mckane
