wonder bow your editor spends his or her summer vaca tion well f can tell you he takes a busman s holiday as a rule by attending the annual convention of the canadian weekly newspap ers association here he is in his glory discussing with fellow edi tors at great length last week s is sue labour troubles the best type of machinery and the best supply houses this year in regina was no ex ception even the weather which cooperated beautifully if a bit warmly came in for little com ment but let one voice be raised querying a town s mill rate or a papers circulation and the bovs are off to another grand pow wow these conventions have built many memories for me over the past ten ears but 1959 will be re membered for a very special rea son in ju in regina the queen city of the prairie province of sas katchewan i was not a participat ng editor as 1 had been for so long oman invited guesc trtwbigdo at this annual event isalwlys uie trophy dinner it is then thateditors of prize winning weeklies walk up to the head table receive the congratulations of their president and return to their own tables proudly carrying their re wards for conscientious endeavour perhaps the most hear warming part of the presentations is the heartv clap of appreciation by the non winning representatives of the weekly press their sports manship is unequalled in any ere ative field that f know of ror this dinner 1 chose to wear a little beige linen and lace number it should have been labelled suit able for married women only why because married men are reputablv adept with balky up pers on thefr wives dresses and this dinner gown i had bought was zipped up the back fetting into the dress was a bree2e i simply called the house keeper and asked for assistance i felt gaj and happ during the re ception and the dinner which fol lowed idle realizing what was ahead of me along about midnight i bade adieu to m dinner companions and departed for mv room when i had laid aside mv clutch bag i reachtd cinfidont for the zipper i couldn t even touch the tab ind the hook an eve at the top was will fastened about eight verle brae from the nape of mv neck i stretched over m shoulder then i tneel reaching for it under m trinpit 1 uasnl even close x be 1 reason d if i sat down id ik nearer mv objective i even thought hopefullv that one arm might be longer than the other it wasn t then i was inspired i grabbed a clothes hanger and started fish for the eve in the tab of the er with the hook of the hang jwistcel and turned trjing to cafci mv reflection in the mir ror but onl succeeded in tearing two long gouges in the satin of my back there is one thing about news paper people or former editors they may be persistent never five in gracefully but they know when thye are licked i slathered my face with cream supposed to er ase haggard lines overnight pin ned my hair up itt curlers and cast my shape on the bed i prayed the hotel wouldnt go up in smoke for i could well una gine an enthusiastic press photo grapher grabbing a shot of me and gleefully writing cutlmes to this effect woman attending conven tion is seen making her escape clad only in a dinner dress and pa tent curlers ah but it didn t happen and i was released from my straight ja cket next morning by a sympathe tic chambermaid for once i wish ed i were a contortionist rather than a columnist next year if i am an invited guest rll choose a button down thefront model to wear to the dinner this resolution and my pleasant memories of the convention filled my thoughts as i watched the prai ne scene from my tram coach window on my way to vancouver there is so much to write about this part of the country that it will take several entries m my diary before i can complete the word picture of my western
