authority at terra cotta the mail bag claims police dont get fair deal on salaries 31 byron street august 28th 1959 georgetown police are not get ting a fair or reasonable deal inso far as wages are concerned the difference in pay between what our local boys get and that paid to provincial police officers is 700 and compared to metropolitan police 1000 a year despite their request for only ab out half the difference between their rate and that of the provm cial very little effort if any had been made to close the gap chairman of the police commit tee mrs anne curne adm ts there is a big discrepancy another member councillor john elliott said he has advocated giving the police approximately what they were asking for and that action should have been taken long ago toifive them substantia increase the third member of the commit tee councillor ernest hvde said meetings of the committee were held at times when he was not free to attend hence he knew no thing about the request council through conciliation has dealt with other emploecs of the municipalitj but it is very unfair to relegate to professional emplo yees a similar statement it is not done with the teaching prof ession and certainly should not apply to the police the writer as a taxpayer is just as much concerned as to municipal expenditure as anyone but not at the expense of the employee it is unfortunate the public is not kept better informed of the work the police force is doing or casional items appear in regard to accidents investigated and safety work done by the traffic officer and this is the extent of the pub licity thej receive a monthly review of work per farmed as supplied by the chief to the police committee would give the public some indication as to the amount of work involved the following is a summary of the first six months of 1969 r comrahs received 960 accid ents investigated 89 parking in fractions 330 prope t insecure 94 charges laid under hta lca cc and town b laws jun del act 172 arrests lca and cc 25 convic uons reg under hta cc lca town by laws 112 warnings issued for traffic violationb 19 ummon ses served for tnr police dept 88 warrants issued and served 15 summons served to witnesses 54 fines and costs taken in po ice court s308550 from the above it can be well realzed the amount of clerical work involved in these transac lions and the trme required i would respectfully suggest that the claims of the force be recog nized without further delay and their increases in pay be made re troactive to the first of 1959 as ap plied in the case of the raise provisions of the subdivision bylaw with council on aug 24 contractor harold fob- ert suggested that the ivi year period allowed for recovery of a 400 per lot payment if industrial assessment is obtained is not long enough for a larger subdivision which might take twice as long to build lie was reminded by reeve sarg ent that this is an optionial provi sion and that a builder can also choose to follow another clause which allows him to construct 25 per cent of a subdivision before providing the balancing 40 per cent industrial assessment asking if the 40 per cent is on the whole subdivision or on the 25 per cent of the houses built reeve sargent told mr fobert that he interpreted this as on the 25 per cent mayor armstrong said that it is councils feeling that if a subdiv ider is trying to follow the by law provisions future councils would be cooperative and not go out of their way to penabze him for instance if an industry were on ttie verge and the 2m year term ran out he would suppose a coun cil might be agreeable to an ex tension of the term he said voting to instal a sidewalk at charles and james streets and an iron guard rail at a culvert coun cil commended property chairman fred harrison for his work in cleaning up a swampy area to pro vide a beauty spot and a future small park indian derivation for credit river augustus jones in a list of the
