ma amfcwrawh i m the georgetown herald published every thursday afternoon nc worthy effort by midtowners i with so much publicity these day about juvenile delinquency end quite unustiftttd we would say as far as georgetown is concerned rt is good to be able to report an effort like the street dance promoted recently by club michown the idea conceived by the midtowners had a double purpose and besides providing en ev enog of outdoor fun it had the higher purpos of raising funds for the new hospital as a re sult cheque for 200 was turned over by the executive last seturday to mrs joe emmerson to pes on to the hospital baerd for the new build ing we have noth ng but praise for these young people who operate a successful series of dances with such side attractions at an organized trip to waega beach and a visit to e k tchener tv show they have encountered a minimum of trou ble during their years of operation and with the help of a few of the towns more senior citizens provide a place where local parents can have assurance that their young people cn congregate for healthy fun speaking of delinquency from time te time there have been undercurrent rumours of the vest troubles encountered in town with the youn ger element we have even heard statistics quo ted varying from the highest rate m canada downwards police chief roy haley d scounfs th s one hundred percent for one thing no statistic are available from any senior source he says plus the fact that a look at the police blotter pre ve the crime incidence tnw or senior n very low in town we dont mean by this that our police force ha nothing to do but sit around and fme people for exceeding the one hour parking limit unfor tunately as long as there are human being there will be those who defy convention and a percen lege of our populace must wind up in police court varying offences there have always been end will always be young peop who tow their id oats indiscriminately they with adult wtal caters must be checked for the common good but all in aft in our observance we can rec ommend georgetown as a good place in which to rarse a family a town whore if e parert uses a steady guiding hand there is a minimum of danger that his youngster wttl not end up a f odd member of the eommuntty swimming instruction excellent v outstanding results of red cross tests at the community swimming pool last week particularly in the senior section where all candidate were successful speaks weu for the- high calibre ef in traction available parents should be thankful to those men preponderenhy members of the lions club who few years back combined enthusiasm with backbreakmg job of fund raising to give geor getown not just a swimming pool but one whtfk bears no debt endwhieh to a large extent is sehmiquldattng in its operations besides the pleasures of swimming available very day at a reasonable cost for both children and adults the morning nttrucon classes are worth their weight in gold and while a fee boost this year seemed sharp there aren t many better ways of investing a five dollar bill than in trained instruction in the swimming arts to miss sandra scott and her coworkers at the pool we pass along congratulations for a job well done a take down committee in the enthusiasm of election campaigns and fund raising drives there is on commniee which could perform a useful function but which m in variably overlooked and it would have a real service to perform for those who have an orderly tra n of mind or who like to enjoy nature i beauty w thout mans additions to the landscape we refer to a poster takingdown commit tee and it was with joy that we heard a serv ce dub member mention rhira one of his commit tees in a forthcoming protect at present there it a reel ob open for a group of cittxens who could spend an evening tounng town and district removing glimpses of th ngs past we have passed one spot where a relic of two elections beck still graces a post and the countryside is still liberally sprinkled with decaying remnants of campaign literature not to mention outdated auction sales bingos garden parties et next time your orgamzanoo planning their advertising why not appoint edeenup committee too it will pay dividends tntrfceping our streets end highways in better cyder altmtrpekosihi there are bigger things than rockets niktte a news story the other day i told of the crash landing of a 20 car old spitfire the last survivor of its breed of the battle of britain far from ma king me nostalgic it gave me a certain satisfaction probab ly i said to myself one of those clappedout dogs we flew at rcdnal thats what they save us to train en spits that had been through the battle of britain and flaw as though theyd been through the battle of hastings no i m afraid 1 didnt get sen timental about the gallant lit tle spitfire whan i read of its demise i get so many bad sca res while flying those things that i always looked en them with a aundiced eye wards but it did start me thinking about one of the happiest times i have ever had and re membering some of the best friends i ever made we took a three months operational tral mng course on spitfires in the heart of shropshire in the dead of an fnfjih winter than which there is nothing deader what a craw wa ware poles australians canadians a nor wegian a couple of french men a belgian a brace of new zealandars an irishman a handful of scots and english and four pilots from india and how well wa got along though so different in outlook and up bringing the only ones who scrapped were the indians am ong themselves because they were a sikh a moslem a chris tian and a hindu and couldnt they smiled a welcome and the pints would flew and the vould kly and in no time at all the pub would be recking with good cheer and good fellowship and good sing ing in a dozen different f ac cents toe singing was the beat part have yoa ever heard a frenchman singing 1 wanna galejus like se flying on bikes with no hands which fre quently meant winding up in a a thorn hedge the climax to the ride back was race down the steep hill to our huts with no lights no hands and very often no brakes thered be tre mendous collisions with cursing laughing bodies flying in all di rections at the bottom it sounds pretty silly and it was but we were all very yonng and very gay even the europeans though their gaiety had an edge of bitterness to it a touch of violence my special friends were nils van singh and paddy we flaw in the same flight ate and drank r and pursued various young women together ive nev- rt one of them since but in those days ws were close as brothers n to his wafce which se tucreri under ene of a series of brilliant ilk turbans curly mack beard flashing brown eyes and white teeth he laughed all the time when he had a hangover he would tell th flight commander it was a religious holiday for him and he couldnt fly they never caught on paddy was a lugubrious irish man with a soft dublin brogue a very dim view of the english and a wonderful gift for mak ing you taugh theyre all dead now nils shot down jn prance van crashed burning a few mi les from his home in belgium singh flew hurricanes in burma and was missing paddy went into the channel one day when he was trying to see how low he would 20 without touching the water but i often warm myself with the memory of those halycon hi larious three months i can close my eyes and see them grinning and a little bit crazy and i can hear them in their assorted ac cents trying to cope with all ouett as i led them through a fast round and ill still think of them when im seve controversial corner by ian cass the merchants of i eioftoetown now that our new chopping plasm has been officially open ed
