the new georgetown hospital its facilities and service estimate 60 new jobs available each year uuch curiosity can be expec ted whenever a new industry comet into a community whe ther it be a branch ol some old established national or interna- tlonal business firm or a lo cal venture how much more interest must be visualtxed twbeo the new industry is a pro- jifluct of the imagmabon plan- ning and effort of almost every family and individual in that i community people are certain to wonder tkbout the type of business which will be earned on the itossibilities for future employ ment for themselves and then children and the amounts of wmltional revenue the new business may be expected to bring go to make progress as jkwhole some curiosity may also be expected about senior wrsonne and their families nd what benefits their coming jnay bring with the hope of perhaps an swering some of the questions the readers of this edition may have the following points are being presented it must be kept in mind of course that a full description of what the hospital should mean in the wa of health leadership co operation with all interested groups and individuals in the preventative aspects of commu mty health and a bare outline of the qualifications of the ma nj many persons who will add their skill and knowledge to these objectives would fill vol umes the best that ma be done is an outline of the facil ities and services their purpose and scope and some descrip tion of the various heads of personnel and families and departments at the bead of the hospital of course will be the members of the board of directors these are the persona who will interpret the health needs of the area seek sound advice and translate the needs into hospital policies baicd on pro viding the best possible care of the sick and injured with the available resources whether of medical skill and knowledge or direct financial aid to carrv out the actual man agement of the hospital with in the framework of the policies is of course a full time job of many people because only one person can be responsible for the direct management and the actual interpreter of directors policies and the needs of the hospital to directors and com mumt the answer is to acquire the services of a general man agcr in hospital terms an administrator this term nologj denotes the complexities of the position and the breadth of knowledge necessary in so very manj areas because the hospital is made up of many parts each of vital and equal importance there is a need for full delegation of responsibility and authority by the administrator to those best qualified to do the job the r s t typical patients room mks crystal wilson from rh hospital a emergency department d splays a typ cal tbbm in the new hospital ready to recaivo the first patient when the new bu id ng opens if another week administrator i fortunate in deed to acquire department heads who are able and willing to accept the responsibility that department heads ara hi qualified nursing director and bar supervisors who giva guidance and leadership to the persons involvad in actually caring for ttia sick and inturad tha dlefltian who uses bar training and knowledge nour ishment in sickness and health to oversee tha preparation and tarvlng of adequate meals to patients and staff tha labora tory and xray technicians who make tha tests and carry out tha diagnostic procedures so that tha staff physicians may batter decide on tha course of treatment tha laundry man gar who makes sura that imtns ara hospital safa for tha pat itnt tha housekeeper who en sures a safe environment for both staff and patients tha chief engineer who maintains the mechanical equipment so vital to the building tha medi cal record librarian who rec ord the course of every hi ness for future assistance and knowledge the business man ager who records tha financial and statistical data which the llfebleod of future growth and development these people are undoubted ly the hospital itself the lead ership and guidance they give to thur coworkers are the framework upon which the hos pi tal must be built elsewhere in this special herald hospital ed tion ou will find photos of many department heads get to know them and what the dc for ou for undot ediy they are a hospital s chief asset having given a brief out ne of the people involved here arc the initial services and facilities offered the hospital opens with 14 obstetrical beds and 14 cribs for newborn there will be 4 mall cribs for children from 15 days to age 9 and 4 larger models for children of from 10 to 13 these are in separate ped iatric area close to a nursing station to provide constant sup ervision and care there will also be a total of 46 adult beds for medical and surgical cases all in all a fair beginning for community health needs as an initial sen cc there w 11 be one dtlivcrv roon an i one labour room for obstelr cji cases one perat ng roon an i as emergency operating room for all surgical work although in each case there is already built in one more of each for future expansion these will go into uu when the demands so indicate there will be also an emer gency and outpatients treatment room for minor treatment re quirements and a large rocov ery room for the care of those who have undergone surgery a qualified specialist in rad iology has been acqmlfed on a visiting basis to give early in terpretation of all x ray exam inations and while many lab oratory specimens will at first be sent to the provincial lab- orator capable man will be available to perform tests and procedures required for inter pretation the best possible equipment has bean acquired to carry out the services outlined although there will be a need for many items for which finances were ust not available your inquiry as to where you may help in their provision will be both welcome and appreciated by every member of the staff for some tunc to come cer tain surgical procedures will still have to be referred to lar ger centres until such time as the hospital can afford the pro per equipment for their per formancc locallj the medical skill to ut lize many of these items is available and it seems a pity that this sk 11 cinnot be used to the utmost right here in our own hospital tlte department head bar been mentioned by claulfica tion of their function because they are so vital to the proper operation of the hospital how ever each will direct and guide a great many other persons who do much of the actual work involved some profes sionally educated some skilled through experience and know ledge gained in allied occupa tioos and some with technical skill and knowledge learned through long apprenticeship there will be some 100 of these important people almost all residents of the area who now enter a new field of work they will have much to learn and many new skills to develop they include all the occupations you would expect to find in a restaurant a commercial laun dry a good hotel a serylce sta tion a public utility sower plant an industrial laboratory or a medical clinic your bospi tal contains every element of all these industries changed only in regard to the specific requirements of giving medical care and treatment to those who are injured or hi these jobs will always exist in the future persons in them will retire or leave and it can be safely predicted that about 60 new jobs will alwajs he open for workers in any particular year for this reason it is evi dent that there will be future job possibilities even without the almost certaintj of contin ued growth in the size of the hospital planning committee spent long hours at the job many people contributed time and talents to the hospital but among the many hundreds who did eo probably the least publicized waa the planning committee it was the responsibility of this group to supervise the planning of the building meet with the architects advise the board of directors and generally supervise the many phases of the birth of the hospital that their task was well carried out may be recorded in the beautiful new building that has reached completion and opena this saturday the members of this group were howard kentner a well known georgetown businessman and builder thomas niven an engineer associated with smith and stone ltd and ted evans local architect with dclrex developments ltd and vice president of the hospital board of directors constructi financing the georgetown herald thursday june 15th 1961 page 7 roads some landscaping citizens
