georgetown herald pnbltilwd fcy dm ttanpimn umlh4 22 main street georgetown ontario w c iiihn pubuihef thursday june 13lh 1963 editorial comment music hath charms if the okt adagfe mvsk hafh charm is true then georgetown ihould be arf ven vnore rearming place inrytmftr to come n i thanm to steamer tfnmebcm a new chapter of the s p e bs q s a hs been formed and thoe who relish harbenhop harmony are waxing enthusiastic about the future the group made its first out-of- town trip to etobicoke last week and they are hard at work perfecting the technique of close harmony which might seem dec eptively simple to the uninitiated but u actually no easy ob barbership singing is something like westerns in movies and television it has its ups and downs but it is basic form of entertainment which never diei out every now and then there is a great revival the present interest stems part ly from the broadway musical the music man we would udge and is closely allied what in a name many words of course become un pleasant through association comic books and movies may make a name synony mous with undesirable characters but many phrases are unpleasant too because of peculiar combination of vowels and con sonants it is as hard lo define beauty of face or figure as it would be to define why cer tain words offend the ear and what can be perfectly acceptable in canada can be the reverse in another englishspeaking country whatever rhe reason a name is most important and we are sometimes shocked by poorly chosen ones pleasant view molel the rose garden te thajiolk singing craie so popular nowa dayi it tvnioo to e that georgefpwn is upholding musical tradition by forma honof such a group yaas back laur town was noted for its choral society and for its excellence of church and school choirs along with the barbers hoppert today we have the legionnaires glee club which is also winning accojades for singing excel lence the two groups will pui georgetown on the musical map again and provide a talent outlet for men who enjoy an even ing of entertainment put on by themselves despite the poets view thai a rose by any other name would smell as sweet one cannot underestimate the value of a pleasant combination of syllables when de signating a person or place in the english language bruce harley comments on britain holland trip georgetown womens instil ute met i knox hall wed evening function in the garbage disposal room or read the blood splattered weekly see what we mean and yet we have stumbled on such dilhes as the home of the friendless a residence for people with whom life has dealt unkindly and the hosp tal for incur able children certainly one of the most illchosen designalons ever dreamed up the moral if one could be drawn is that one should th nk twice before des g wdlter c biehn garfield mcgilvrey produiimn suptnntrn changing municipal theory decision of the local public school board not to om in a campaign to make remuneration for trustees possible leaves us with mixed feelings as a long time opponent of other than token fees for public office we are inclined to say bravo but from todays practical standpoint we dont think the trustees should be sing led out to serve entirely frea while other municipal functions are handled by men whose salaries are reaching to the four fi gure bracket we still think a token payment would not reduce the number of men who want to enter public service and that it is entirely possible that eventually some will have an eye more on the meeting fee than on the genuine desire to serve bui assuming that the concept of pay ing up to 20 a meeting is todays rule one surely can expect and well nigh dem and more than an afterhours type of government perhaps the time has coma to reappraise our whole municipal let up ro pay councillors enough to make fhe ob 1 least a part time one and to provide training courses tor men who enter public office and perhaps we should also look at the extreme and make public office dts r able enough to make it full time at least for senior members of local government the danger of course is thai instead of attracting more and better qualified can didates for office we could attract less not very man is willing to gamble a steady ob for the iransient glory of public i fe but neither ire too many men nowa days willing to serve on public bodies if the work entails more after hours serv ce than tha energy which mull be devoted to their daily occupation demands it would seem to us tha one solut on to a mounting problem is a to put more of community management in fhe hands of an adequately pa d municipal off ce staff b to cut the work load of elected officials by eliminating many of the smaller details with concentre on on planning and broader decisions c to make training courses available foi suraly fathers day it tht n v i i moil insignificant occasion on tin ir i hi l i n i th calendar everybody know hit li i il in n which sunday in may it moth r i day but there i
